I've said for years the US needs to set up a PROPERLY RUN program that gets the farmers the workers they need...at a fair wage for both the worker and the farmer.
Hole as much as 50% of their wages in an interest bearing account that they can access once they return to Mexico or where ever...make leaving the country at the end of the season a mandatory condition for them to come back the next year. If they skip...or refuse to leave, deport them and make them ineligible for the program for a period...5 years? Lifetime?

A LOT of the "jobs that Americans won't do are actually "jobs Americans won't do for the shitty wages and in the shitty working conditions that the illegals will."
 
There's only a limited amount of fossil fuel reserves we, as a species, can now burn without causing disastrous levels of warming. So is it a good use of that limited quota to expend it on poor-quality oil that involves other environmental damage to produce and transport?

I strongly disagree - we should make it much, much easier to come here. The answer for America is not to wall ourselves off from competition like North Korea in the hopes that our wages will go up.

The empirical literature of the effects of immigration of wages is very mixed, with some results finding zero or even positive effects. Are you saying you understand economics better than the professional economists who authored these papers? If so, what did they get wrong?

Immigration is why we've kept our technological edge - we brain drain everyone else.
Immigration also keeps our population growth roughly stable. Without it, we'd be well on our way to a shrinking population overall.

I agree. It's just that Trump and his fellow racists who think like him are very picky about who to let in and join the Club of America. To them, for some odd weird reason skin color is the only qualifier that matters. In their eyes being white somehow automatically makes a person superior in intellect and have the potential for being more "American" than any other ethnic variable.

Their biggest fear is that Equal Opportunities for all who reside here will expose that lie they've been living in, so their best efforts have gone into attempting to deny those same opportunities that in every way is to them an hellacious existential threat to their precious racist superiority belief system to the point where their Christian God, who just so happens to have been a brown skinned Middle Eastern Jew is a nordic fair skinned guy that looks just like them. Interesting about "farmers". Would one not say that farmers are in fact treated "differently" or "better" than most other American workers? I sure know they are treated special in iOwa. Farmers are treated as the elite, with the red carpeted, as the very first in the line because farmers.... vote.... republican..... Not so much because farmers feed the world or not so much because farmers might deserve their special treatment, but simply because it all comes down to their loyalty in voting republican. Now, one could argue the merits of farmers but farmers definitely do hold a special "elevated" place in the world of politics, so is it really fair for a farmers needs to be addressed above and beyond the needs of a fast food worker? Or, before the needs of a teacher or of nurse or of ditch digger? No. No it is not fair. Teachers and nurses and ditch diggers do not reliably vote republican, however... farmers do. So what does a teacher or fast food workers have to do to get some attention, to enjoy the same attention as your typical farmer enjoys, grow a plant?

He must not like all of the really good Mexican restaurants, there are on his side of the Cascades. Little towns along the Colombia. But, they should really just pick fruit and go home.

Meh, there is very little actual mexican food. We culturally appropriated it and Americanized it. Real mexican food is crap though to be honest. We took the good parts of Fajitas, Burritos, tacos, etc... and ditched the overwhelming majority of it heh.

Sure, you can go to hole in the wall places that are probably legit mexican. I've been to a good number overall.

Majority of folks go to Americanized places like Chuy's, Torchys Tacos, Cafe del rio, Jimmy changas, Papacitos, etc. All started by whitey.... and they're much better.

Even the non-chain places are all tex-mex. I work with a mexican citizen (who came in illegally, but got his green card with Reagan) he bitches about how when he goes home now all the food in Mexico is becoming more like tex-mex and less Mexican. A lot of tex-mex was developed by Hispanics, though, not all whiteys.

As for him, he came here illegally after working the copper mines in Mexico under horrible conditions. Picked apples in Washington, learned english, got a BS and MS in mechanical engineering, has gotten an MBA, worked at John Deere designing trackers for years and has now been doing aerospace engineering on military aircraft for the last 20 years. He owns a couple of grocery stores in Mexico that his mother and brother run now too. Perfect example of how we stole a little bit of brain trust from Mexico, who would've let him rot in a copper mine.

This is what Biden seems to be doing so far and I think if he keeps doing it he might really lead a true realignment. Forget the culture war stuff, just pass bills that are super popular and help both the poor and middle class. Demolish the filibuster and dare the Republicans to oppose you. I hope he can do it.

Maybe partisanship is too strong to matter and the electoral map might be too rigged, but growth in 2021-2022 is likely to be very strong and there’s a lot of really popular legislation to be passed.

Colbert did a segment on how Biden isnt riling up the Republican base like Obama did (hmmm wonder why!) so all the talking heads can do is rant about meaningless stuff.

Post Covid I hope he gets us out of the middle east and drastically reduce military spending. In the short term shift that money to infrastructure projects but we also need to reduce the deficit. Trump and his fiscally conservative friends had ballooned the deficit before Covid.
