I'm in Chattanooga and those jobs are very much in demand. There simply aren't many jobs where one can make a decent wages and move up through hard work rather than education.

My property taxes are almost $1200 for a modest home, 1,700 ft including finished basement, minimal brick and stucco on a wood siding frame house. Folks in the city pay about double that.

Lucky. We're $6000 or thereabouts in one of Chicago's fine southern suburbs in Crook Co. Around the same size house, same type of construction. Want to hear a cool perk? We have like multiple armed police officers in our local high school. Pretty cool perk for $6k a year in property taxes alone right?

$6K property tax on how much (value of the house) if you don't mind telling.

My friends in TX are paying about $1.5K to low $2K on houses of $200 to $250K and up and I thought it was a lot. Other friends in LA (state) are paying about $1K to $1.2K on $200 to 250K houses.

Yike.

Well, you have to consider the market reality. Prior to the housing crash, our house would have been worth around $130k, as we've done quite a bit of remodeling.

Now, post crash, houses are going from a range of $45k to $92k (although the $92k was a house that had burned down in the early 90's, so it's newer). Our house is probably worth around $70k at close, give or take $10-$15k, maybe even $20k, depending.

Ouch. Salaries tend to be higher though. And eventually you can retire, sell that house, move down to G-d's country and buy a nicer house with some land for a fraction of what you get for yours.

I believe we still typically have one or two armed officers in our high schools. I'm not sure though; I have a grandson in first grade but my other grandson is out of school. Our city school system folded and I know the city and the county were fighting over the cost of the officers so I'm not absolutely sure they are still there.

Yes, true. I've known a few of the older people I used to work with do exactly that, to TN actually. One guy in CT and his wife are living like royalty down there (but because of what happened to his dad, he was a nazi like saver/retirement prepper...and he is certainly enjoying that now). I will likely not stay here once my parents die. I'll visit, maybe even for extended periods of time, but really, IL and the surrounding area is a fairly boring state, unless you get down to Southern IL area. Likely I'll head out towards WY/CO area, or, FL if I can find an area I like close to the Gulf (might rethink that given the oil contamination).

We have a few that wander the halls during passing periods, openly fully armed. The sign at the school says it is 'One of Americas Best High Schools'...even though it has had below state averages and a problem school for like 10 years running or something like that. Got to love delusions...
