Jobless Claims fall to a 5 year low

Sadly we are all becoming like Texas: lower unemployment thanks to low paying jobs.

same here. starting pay for teh few factories/warehouses around here used to be $15-18 an hour. with good pay after 3-5 years.

many places went through a lot of layoffs with rehires. they hired new people with starting pay of $9-11. with shitty increase's in pay.

Can't let the serfs get all uppity with a living wage now.

I think once the labor market tightens up a bit you will start to see wages move back up again.

It's hard to justify paying good salaries when former executives are willing to sweep the floor at Wendy's for eight bucks an hour.

True, but that's been happening since the early 70s. The nature of good news isn't what it used to be, but by today's standards this is very good news.

Exactly right.

VW opened a plant in North America with intention it would be able to sell a particular model for $22,000 (i forget the actual amount). In order to this the wages had to be around ~$14/hour (about $28 with bennies). They were able to do this in Chattanooga, TN beating out Michigan.

That is a liveable wage in Tennessee. Yearly property taxes are probably $900 for an average sized home. No income tax, just a sales tax.

Not spectacular wages but 2000 people are very glad VW opened this plant in TN rather than paying someone $1/hour in Mexico.

Yeah, that's why I am hoping that the Right to Fire States stay South.

And the new auto plants opennings for the last 20-30 plus years (Honda/Toyota/Nissan/Kia/Hyndai/VW/etc.) were at what state/area? (hint: TN, AL, MS, TX, etc.)

<<====spent a few years at one of the auto plants.

With the Trillion we are using to prop up the economy those numbers should be much better.

Not when we are losing revenue this way....

And these pricks are sitting on Trillions of dollars which they could use to be hiring people like gangbusters.

Get back to me when you work in a GM or Chrysler plant.

Why would they hire when the economy isn't in good shape and they are facing more regulations making it harder for them to be in business

You could add all the taxes they should have paid over 10 years and it wouldn't even be $1 Trillion.

Bullshit. Right to work states have nothing to do with jobs moving overseas or the push for a service sector economy. In fact it is those states who have gone the route of "Right to Work" who are helping preserve what little competitive edge in manufacturing we have in this nation by allowing plant owners to just move states instead of shipping jobs overseas due to government regulations and unions imposing added costs which do not allow them to compete with foreign made goods.

I'm in Chattanooga and those jobs are very much in demand. There simply aren't many jobs where one can make a decent wages and move up through hard work rather than education.

My property taxes are almost $1200 for a modest home, 1,700 ft including finished basement, minimal brick and stucco on a wood siding frame house. Folks in the city pay about double that.
