Cool you're from Hawaii....I'm on Big Isle. Job market is ok in Honolulu in that field, it is steadily growing too. Real Estate is also a hot market to get into.

I'm a junior majoring in MIS at UH, and the job market for IT here sucks. Entry-level positions, if you can find them, are well below the average on the Mainland, running about 30-35k for someone with a Bachelor's degree. Mid-level runs about 50-60k, well below the 60-80k you get on the Mainland as well.

UH was my second choice. I got accepted to the for Electrical Engineering, but I chose to come here in San Diego. :D
I graduated Dec of 2003 with a BS in Information Systems. I finally got offered a full time entry-level position on Friday for a Systems Administration/Accountant position. Only pays 29K tho...

I'm pursuing MIS in Hawaii because I believe in studying what you are interested in regardless of market conditions. :) I'm praying in a few years when I graduate, Bush will somehow make the Indians bring nuclear holocaust upon themselves :p

I run my own PC/Web Design business and am also being considered for an Administrative Assistant position
at a large private school. I also run all computer operations for our photgraphy business-Photoshop! :D

I'll admit...IT is a tough field here. You probably want to come home though huh?

Pray hard on that one!
Good for you on the pursuit of what you want. I stayed in IT because I love it also, despite the fact that it sucks here. Hawaii is home for me :)

Yeah I'm working Tier 1 tech support at UH anyway, and I've had a mish-mash of temporary PC repair/support positions over the past few years. I should come out the other end with a degree and 3-5 years worth of experience. Should put me a few steps ahead of the bookworms.

Thats awesome. Can I come work for you? :D May I ask you your salary?

Hrmm, do I want to go back to Hawaii? Not really :D. I do love Hawaii, my parents still live in Waipahu and I try to go visit them once in awhile. However I was there last summer, and the traffic in the downtown area is even more herendous than when I used to live there. If I get an IT job, then it probably be in downtown somewhere. Life is too slow there too, well for me at least at this point of my life. It's too laid back and it makes me lazy haha. But Hawaii is an option if I can get offered a good paying job. I'll probably want to move back there later in life.

how are the housing prices in honolulu ? We were in Maui and a $300k house cost $4mil cause it was up near Mt. Haleakala. They said a typical (rundown) 3-bedroom costs $500k.

My mom's 2 bed, 2 bath duplex could sell for over 400k right now. you can get a decent condo for $300k. i think the median sale price on Oahu now is around 600k.
