More of a project/daily driver thread than a build thread, but eh whatever. When I have money it'll turn into a build thread. :awe:

A few of you may know I picked up a truck a few months back - it's a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 x-cab V6 with the TRD Offroad package. ~266k miles, $4500. Here it is, sitting in the previous owner's driveway:

Since I bought it, I haven't done much - removed the spacer lift from the front (it already has ToyTec/Bilstein coilovers) and picked up some new tires since it had three different brands on it:

I went for an alignment today and was told the steering rack bushings and the left inner tie rod end need to be replaced. I was quoted $49.99 for rack bushings and $73.99 for a tie rod end..plus $179.86 in labor. False.

The OEM rubber rack bushings have a reputation of wearing out very quickly, so Energy Suspension shall replace them. I'm also replacing both inner tie rod ends instead of just one. The previous owner has a set he'll give me for $30. Both lower ball joints are seeping grease, and the upper right ball joint's boot is starting to split so I'm going to replace all four (two upper, two lower) - $120.88 for 4x Mevotech from Amazon.

Both CV axles have split boots. I have an OEM Toyota boot kit here, but since rebuilding axles is a pain in the ass, I ordered two complete axle assemblies from RockAuto. Oddly enough, two axles with shipping was $102....and the Toyota boot kit alone was ~$70. Since OEM axles are reportedly stronger than aftermarket, I will rebuild and keep them. However, since it's MUCH faster to just swap them out, I'll do that first and worry about the rebuild later.

The dome light is destroyed - $30.19 new OEM (vs $25 used on eBay..HMMM, no brainer there). The center console latch is broken and one of the support arms is missing - $7.37 and $3.46 respectively. The parking brake cable is gone, but the seller said he has it kicking around somewhere so I'll try to get it from him.

So, here's the list:

Tires: 31x10.50 Falken Rocky Mountain AT
CV axle replacement and rebuild
4x ball joints
Steering rack bushings
Inner tie rod ends
Dome light assembly
Center console latch and support
Parking brake cable

All in all, I think it'll work out just fine. :)

Its not a jlee build thread until there's a lift kit, 35's and a blower involved :p

Debating rebuilding this motor at some point and throwing a TRD supercharger on it, but that'd be a bit of a project. First order of business is getting everything where it should be.

A supercharger on that right now with that mileage would send the rings packing :awe:

Thinking a turbo setup with an AEM FIC piggyback (after a rebuild) might be fun.

Though I really should keep something somewhat stock as a daily...

TRD supercharger is plenty awesome for a daily! not to mention they tuned that way on the safe side perfect for what you need a little extra but all of the reliable!

IIRC they tend to run lean without a 7th injector kit. If I were to do it I'd be tempted to jump injector size up a bit and run an AEM FIC..

Axles, rack bushings, and door handle are here - unfortunately I'm slammed with work this week and might not have time to play with it for a while.

I'll have a surprise for you guys tomorrow though. :awe:

Nice Taco, my dad has an '01 SR5, it has been a great truck (I drive it more than he does now). I am a big Toyota fan, I prefer the older pickups myself though mostly because I own one, not much Toyota will be left when I am done with it though. Those OEM steering rack bushings do tend to wear out, replaced them twice so far in the 219k on the truck next time I will convince him to go with the poly replacements. Since you live in AZ I would imagine you don't have any rust issues with it either, that's a major plus, my dads truck had the frame replaced by Toyota a couple years ago. Good luck fixing it up and enjoying the truck, now you just need to start some off road upgrades!:D

My '98 was bought back by Toyota in 2008. This one is spotless as far as rust goes. I pulled a shock mount bolt off with a ratchet - no lube, no breaker bar, and it didn't even snap. It's amazing. :p

Yeah I wish I could say that, most things I work on require impact tools, torches, lots of PB Blaster, and plenty of swearing to get it to cooperate. I wish I could find a Toyota that clean around here. Pretty soon I will have to start doing some body work to my dads truck, its starting to get a bit rusty. My dads '01 technically did not qualify for the frame recall but they decided they would replace the frame for him anyway, I even convinced them to install an 1.5" OME lift I was getting ready to install when they replaced the frame. Saved me a lot of aggravation and busted up knuckles.

I know the feeling...I was in New Hampshire at the time. Move to AZ - it's nicer here. :awe:

Sometimes I wish I could, but I like it in the woods of VT at least for now.

I remember installing the rear lift in my '98....had to cut the shackle bolts off because we couldn't get them apart. Have fun up there...buy lots of air tools. :p

That's why I was so glad the dealership agreed to install the lift on my dads truck when they replaced the frame. I have most of what I need for air tools, although you can never have enough tools! I think I should buy stock in PB Blaster too! :D

black2na practically swears by a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF in a squirt bottle - said it's even better than PB Blaster. I haven't tried it yet but I will.
