he's good, but.... more on an influence level than a talent level.

i personally think his tone sounds like shit. but i realize that was the 70's and shit so im not all that critical..

but there are plenty of guitars that would blow him out the water if you had a "blind listening test" and just listened to the guitars without knowing who was playing..

Maybe at a technical level there are better guitarists, but honestly, at a pure musical level Hendrix is the best guitar player that ever lived. The stuff that Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, Buckhead, etc do is technically amazing but from a musical perspective a computer could generate more ear pleasing sounds than those guys.

As for tone, wow. Listen to Little Wing. Makes you want to run out and buy a Strat. His over the top fuzzy stuff was, well, over the top, but overall his tone is fantastic.

yup... that's what I'm saying. There are probably tens of thousands of guitarists out there that have better technique than Jimi displayed. i won't argue though, that these guitarists werent alive when jimi was, wasn't a pioneer that Jimi was, etc. But that still doesn't mean that my buffet of music to listen to doesn't have more pleasing sounds to choose from than what jimi offered.

What would Jimi sound like with todays tones, amps, effects, guitars, recording technology???

hehe, true, and I'm a big Dylan Fan.

So am I, but most of the covers of his songs are much better, he was an amazing song writer, just to stoned to perform

Saying Jimi is the best is doing a disservice to many other great, great guitarist.

Playing electric guitar is significantly easier than acoustic and they are so many styles of music that guitar is perfectly suited for:

On the electric guitar side Jimi is definitely the most famous, but i think Stevie Ray Vaughn is probably the best electric guitarist to play main stream so far.

As exhibit A) Texas Flood watch the whole thing please... you will see some shit that will blow your mind.

But then there other electric greats: Van Halen, Dick Dale, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc... of all of them Jimmy Page might be the best musician and most creative.

On the acoustic side there are guys like Robert Johnson, Segovia, Parkening, Django Reinhardt, Tony Rice, and so many more...

Don't forget the flamenco pioneer Paco Text

It would be hard to just love one style. I don't think i can say one fantastic player is better than another, everyone has their strenghts.

None of those guys deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as any of the guys i mentioned above. Your guys are really good but they are not uber, not creators of new sounds and techniques on the guitar.

Feel like you have spammed this thread enough? People just wanted to come in and appreciate Jimi's music. Ask about any great with an electric guitar who the best was and most will say Jimi Hendrix.

Where the guitar was and where it ended up in the 3 years he was famous was remarkable. The quality of music (especially live) that he put out between 1967 and his death in 1970 is staggering. People still listen to his music today, almost 40 years after his death. Guitarists are still influenced by his music today. That will continue to be the largest difference between his music and other electric guitarists. He had "it".

Page? Prince is technically better, and more creative. Prince might be better than Jimi, it's pretty close. I know the majority of guitar legends would put either Prince or Jimi at the top of their lists, probably both. Page is good, I think Clapton is better. Prince at his best is untouchable though.
