Jimi does Dylan better than Dylan himself

Best guiter player ever. Noone can touch him with the rhythm, fluidity, pace, emotion, and finesse he conjures. Him and the guitar are like a symbiote. Its great how he is so chill while pushing notes. He doesn't ever look like he's trying hard.

wow, thanks for sharing - I never really listened to his stuff since I don't like classic rock. But this is timeless

ok, thank you - clicked around and listened to "Voodoo Child" - this shit is heavy, edgy, and could be a single today..

Please recommend an album as a starting point to my voyage 🙂

Wow, never saw this before thanks. Great Song written by a Great Poet performed by a Great Guitarist. Full of Win.

he's good, but.... more on an influence level than a talent level.

i personally think his tone sounds like shit. but i realize that was the 70's and shit so im not all that critical..

but there are plenty of guitars that would blow him out the water if you had a "blind listening test" and just listened to the guitars without knowing who was playing..

edit: he did have a great stage presence.

Well said and totally agreed. Nobody, not Clapton, not Beck, no guitarist ever wanted to follow Mr. Jimi on stage.

Edit: Saw him in '68 on a revolving stage at the Spectrum in Philly, and again on New Years Eve in '69 at the Phillmore East in NYC.

Electric Ladyland is his masterpiece, and has Voodoo Child on it. You also get All Along the Watchtower (another Dylan cover), a 15 minute blues version of Voodoo Chile, and an amazing 25 minute jazz/dreamy suite in Rainy Day, Dream Away/1983/Moon Turn the Tides/Still Raining, Still dreaming.

Hendrix put out 3 studio albums in his lifetime, plus a live album. There was another studio album in the works when he died.

His live version of Machine Gun is just a spectacle to behold.

ELL is amazing indeed. Steve Winwood on that 15 min blues version of VC is amazing. His Band of Gypsies stuff is amazing too because it was basically the direction he was headed. His orchestration stuff (9 to the universe?) was also really interesting.

I think it's dumb to try and claim a best when it comes to music but he was certainly one of the most influential people to ever play the instrument.

That was the 60s. He pioneered much of the rock guitar technique, and while there may be technically better guitarists, there's damned few that have the soul of Hendrix. Much of that "crappy" sound was custom tuned by Jimi personally. He hand wound his pickups, and much of his equipment was modded to his specifications. Also, he was the only one that could setup his amps for live shows to get the sound he was looking for.

Axis: Bold as Love is my favorite Hendrix album

But live is where great Hendrix lives - try and find him playing 'Red House' at the NY Pop Festival, Randall's Island. Best version of that song he ever played IMO.
So many other great ones too. 'Little Wing' is another fantastic song.

Wow I'm dissapointed all these young guys never heard Jimi Hendix's songs. I'm 28 but I love Jimi Hendrix. I like the slower stuff: Castles Made of Sand, Angel, The Wind Cries Mary, Bold as Love.

And always Techboy is always good for a chuckle. Are you kidding? Jimi Hendrix was playing Along The Watchtower and Voodoo Child while other bands sounded like The Beatles and that kind of "rock". He was light years ahead of everyone.

If Elvis was the king of rock n roll then Jimi was the god of rock.

Did you notice I acknowledged him for his influence? I wasn't trying to argue his influence on music. I've listened to Jimi alot. Had many nights where thats all i listend to and jammed out to. No doubt he was a pioneer. No doubt there are thousands of guitarists today that are equally as talented, soulful, etc. And yes, i understand, these are different times.

Maybe at a technical level there are better guitarists, but honestly, at a pure musical level Hendrix is the best guitar player that ever lived. The stuff that Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, Buckhead, etc do is technically amazing but from a musical perspective a computer could generate more ear pleasing sounds than those guys.

As for tone, wow. Listen to Little Wing. Makes you want to run out and buy a Strat. His over the top fuzzy stuff was, well, over the top, but overall his tone is fantastic.
