Jiffy Lube = theft

One of my girl friends who doesn't know much about much (nothing at all) went to jiffy lubes. She ended up spending over $50 and she was none the wiser. She found out she got ripped off when I told her places usually do oil changes for $2x. She was bragging that they gave her a "free" car wash lol.

That is why I change my oil at home. 4 quarts of mobil 1 + stp filter = $15 bucks.

LOL. Learn to change the oil yourself. It's a rather simple process that entails removing a oil pan bolt, placing a bucket or something to use to drain the oil, removing the filter, replacing the filter, and then the bolt and filling your engine with new oil.

The problem isn't changing the oil, it's disposing of the old oil.

All the auto parts stores around me will recycle it for free. When I change my oil, I usually put the old oil in the empty oil containers. Then I take them with me the next time I go to buy new oil. Rinse, repeat.

WTH do you buy Mobil 1 so cheap?? I pay $6.50/qt! I won't use anything less though but I'd like to not get gouged in the process.

So is cooking a hamburger but don't tell me you don't get a fast food burger once in a while.

Situations like this demonstrate the importance of being an EDUCATED consumer. You should do research before you buy anything. Knowing all of your options and taking the time to assess the best choice puts all the power in your court and completely removes the salesman from the equation. If you listen to a salesman there is a high probability you are being lied to or at least pushed into a product that is good but simply provides more profit for them while not really gaining you any tangible benefits. Caveat Emptor.....words to live by and you will save a ton of cash over your lifetime.

i know my local Pep Boys, Autozone, and Advanced Auto Parts all take used oil for free

Jiffy lube doesn't hire real mechanics.

A local mechanic, certified up the arse, does the oil change for me, and charges 18 bucks for it. Cool guy too, and he never ever pushes me on what I should do, or this needs work. "I need oil change. now" his reply: "ok." And that's it. $18 bucks, oil change, and he even checks/tops of fliuds.

AutoZone or Advanced Auto or Wal-Mart for free? Basically every store that sells oil will take used oil for free (at least in New England).

$53.99 for a $&*@!$# oil change?!?

"Oh, but we top off your fluids, vacuum your floormats, clean your windows, yadda yadda yadda....."

me: "My truck is already clean and I take care of my own maintenance. How much for "Just" an oil change?

Them: "We don't do "just" oil changes, you get the whole package!

Me: F^ck off.

😕 I'd like to know where this jiffy lube is that charges $50+ for thier service? I used to go to them with my old car, i'd take a coupon in from the paper, and get it done for $20, including all shop and oil fees.

I think its a decent place for old people and young females to go have their oil changed if they dont feel confortable doing it themselves. Just dont let the big scary salesperson con you into buying more than you need 😛

No one rips you off like the 'geek squad'

They provide a service to people who don't know their way around computers. Just think of them as auto mechanics for computers. I think the Geek Squad was like 40% of BBY's profit last year? Leads me to believe that people are more than willing to pay for it.

false advertising from their chain.

i don't think false advertising and theft are the same either

although false advertising is more serious than good salesmanship

but i am not sure your example qualifies for false advertising either. i am not saying the employee didn't lie to you

if i was you, i would write a letter to the coporate HQ of jiffy lube and tell them the store where you were lied to. that is what i would do

contact us
Jiffy Lube International, Inc.
PO Box 4427
Houston, TX
77210-4427
(713) 546-4100

the store number should be on your reciept

good luck!

Jiffy Lube corporate won't do jack crap, when I lived in Houston the local media would run stories all the time about how Jiffy Lube would fark peoples cars up, sometimes completely destroying them and then denying responsibility all the way up to the corporate level.
The only time my car ever went into a Jiffy Lube was for an emissions check and then I kept a very close eye on them.

i have new cars under warrenty. I only let the dealer do all work on them. This includes only changes. They offer 9.99 oil changes and other perks. Plus if there is a quesiton on maitence, they did it all and have all the records. They can't tell me the jiffy lub guy did something wrong.

ya, the AutoZone near by, and even Wal-Mart around here takes the used oil.
Just for me, I'm not a car nut, and Don't want to get under the car to do the whole thing. My Dad always changes his own oil, but it helps when you have a huge garage, at the workplace, heh.

This one is in Anchorage, Alaska. Standard Oil Change Service is $53.99. But, as the "tech" gleefully pointed out, I earned a whopping $4 discount for supplying my own oil and filter! $49.99 is SUCH a great deal...

Sad thing is, before Jiffy Lube I went to an Xpress Lube and they told me it was gonna be $51.99. And they were pricks about it. At least Jiffy Lube would have smiled while ripping me off.

I used to take my truck to the dealer for oil changes too... but I just got sick of them needing the thing for a whole day to do it. My dealer sucks.

I have the wife use Jiffy Lube on occasion and they sign off on the maitenance log just like the dealer that we also use. They're certified for required warranty maitenance, there never any question on the maitenace if I keep the reciept and they sign off on it.

Damn. THe wallyworld up here sells the 5qt. jugs for 29.76. Low prices my ass. We don't even have targets or even Kmarts. wallyworld runs the discount superstore market. I use 5-30 also, if it's summer-ish. In the winter I drop down to 0w-30. Never thought it made a difference but it sure did!

I admit i go to Jiffy Lube and never had a problem. Yeah they ask me to change the air filter and I kindly say no.
In the end I get a quick Oil and Filter change, instead of getting up at 8am on Saturday and waiting a hour or two at a regular dealership or Mavis.

Yes I paid an extra 7 dollars but I also get a free local car wash coupon worth $10.50.

Whats so bad about that?

then keep on getting ripped off by Jiffy Lube. no one cares. just dont come here complaining like a little kid.

you got a major chip on your shoulder.
you came here complaining that jiffy lube ripped you off
people told you how to not get ripped off
you complain about people telling you what to do

I took my car there once for an oil change because it was due and the shop I usually get it done at was closed. I'm never going there again, not because they did a poor job but because their employees look like high school dropouts. Just don't trust my car with them anymore.

**Edit - The shop I usually go to even has a free loaner car I could use for a few hours while they do the oil change.
