i was wondering this...can ya'll enlighten me please...and please no racist remarks or sterotypes...i would really like this to be a mature converstation of this topic.

um i think it's both a religion and a race. But which came first? I'm thinking it was a race first then the religion kept it that way, since inter religion marriage rarely happened back in the day. But now i think the race lines are pretty blurred. I'm gonna vote for religion.
but it really doesn't matter because we'll all be mauve one day.

this is definately a valid question that i have pondered before. it seems to me that because of hitler is was very frowned upon to call jewish a race and not just a religion. most jews have specific physical characteristics which is a racial and not religious indicator. also most jews that i know consider themselves a 'people' and not just a different religion.

wiki says "ethno-religious group"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew

Jews (Hebrew: ?????????, Yehudim; Yiddish: ?????, Yiden) are followers of Judaism or, more generally, members of the Jewish people (also known as the Jewish nation, or the Children of Israel), an ethno-religious group descended from the ancient Israelites and from converts who joined their religion.

Generally, in modern secular usage, Jews include three groups: people who practice Judaism and have a Jewish ethnic background (sometimes including those who do not have strictly matrilineal descent), people without Jewish parents who have converted to Judaism; and those Jews who, while not practicing Judaism as a religion, still identify themselves as Jewish by virtue of their family's Jewish descent and their own cultural and historical identification with the Jewish people.

Yes, what is your point? The OP obviously knows it is a religion. Any idiot knows it is a religion. His question is if it's a race/ethnicity or just a religion. That implies he knows it is a religion and he's asking if it is a race or ethnicity in addition to that.

It's just a religion, there are plenty of white, black, or whatever Jews.

Or did you miss the whole converts bit of your own quote?

It's a religion and an ethnicity. You can have both the religion AND the ethnicity, or just one of them, or neither of them.

It is not just a religion. It can refer to a follower of the religion or it can refer to a member of the ethnic group. There are religious Jews who are not ethnic Jews, and there are ethnic Jews who don't practice Judaism.

So there are ethnic Jews and non-ethnic Jews? I guess that makes Judaism a religion and not an ethnicity.

I'm going to assume that the OP is intelligent enough to read the two quotes I posted and come to the correct conclusion. Frankly I don't care if you agree with me, this thread is not for your benefit.

it's no more an ethnicity than being a Mormon. Yeah, because of prefered inter-religion breeding, you've got a slightly more consistent group of genes. but a shade of white is still white. and you can be "officially" jewish and be mostly black or mostly asian, so it really doesn't mean anything. german people aren't a different ethnicity from english people, even though they often look different.

I agree. Apparently this thread is for people to say things they know nothing about outside of what they read on Wikipedia.
