I'm pretty sure that Microsoft is the reigning champion of this phenomenon through their recent reinvention of the Notepad program to include AI and text formatting.
I'd rather have a notepad reskin and still be able to google 'linux cli change ip address' and get one answer.

I don't get it. I can think of at least two answers to that question in Windows and I bet they're at least OS version dependent (it also wouldn't surprise me if there are further different answers depending on the version of PowerShell). I'm sure there'll be more variations in Linux distros and distro versions, but if you were looking for a clear-cut distinction, that wasn't it :)

I think the problem is ubiquitous in software. People just like to change shit, and making new stuff is more fun than tweaking old stuff. For linux vs windows, I've said that linux is linux. Know one, you know them all, but that isn't the full story. You should be able to figure out anything if you know one of them, and not expect keystroke by keystroke compatibility amongst all the packages and distributions. That's it's strength. You can pick what works for you. With windows(or gnome), you can take it as delivered, or you can fuck off.

Eh, the CMD/DOS version still works, and has since '96, and I don't believe the PS version has ever changed since the aught's.

Persistent changes to system settings were bad enough across distros before the catastrophe that is is systemd descended upon the landscape, they've never really recovered from that.

I found a third way in Windows: wmic :)

netsh was introduced in Windows 2000 apparently (I assumed that's what you originally were referring to). Are you referring to another method? :)

wmic is an interface for .net. powershell is a wrapper for both/for .net because doing stuff in WMIC is somehow even worse than powershell.

I was just talking about ipconfig, followed by new/set-netipaddress. netsh came after ipconfig (and was used for other stuff) but you'll note which one is still used more :p
