That...seems like a really bad precedent to set. As one of them said in the article, predicting earthquakes is a crapshoot. It's not like they intentionally covered up a potential quake coming.

Yeah, it seems like a terrible precedent. I remember a lot of upset about it at the time they were charged. Not sure what the final outcome was (that link was what I found after a quick search). I think maybe they were eventually acquitted on appeal?
