Weird to see this on imgur. I went to middle school in this town, go back/thru at least 2 or 3 times a year. Downeast history time.

Cliffs: War of 1812 happens, Brits give the people of St. Stephen a crap load of gunpowder to use on the barbaric Yankees. They took a vote and decided continuing to live in peace with their neighbors was more important than listening to London. Calais didn't want to fight their neighbors either. These communities trade and intermarry, no one wanted any of that noise. So they gave the gunpowder to Calais, asking them to instead turn it into fireworks. Yep, they opted to party. In the end no one got hung. So now every summer they do the Festival and everyone gets soggy drunk while watching river races and fireworks. The end.

Good fishing on the St Croix btw all you anglers. It's got a fresh water portion that is loaded with smallmouth, also some brief but decent rapids. The salt water portion below the falls has striped bass, sculpin and flounder. Tasty feesh. Between Deer Island NB and Eastport ME you'll see the whirlpool, Old Sow. Take a coat.
