I can't figure out what the mortar and pestle is doing there.
My guess is for cardamon. I remember seeing bedouin and city Arabs alike use a mortar and pestle to smash up cardamon seeds, which they'd then use with tea. Might also be for chai, which has a medley of ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, and other spices, much of which you need to beat up before you bring on the milk.
That pic looks a lot more lush than where I was. Could be Syrians, Turkmen and others more to the West do breakfast different. I know Turks prefer coffee for the most part.
