It really is striking how we have such a gluttonous and slothy society -- pretty much owning the podium in those events -- given that we are also one of if not the most fitness-obsessed and -driven society's in the world.

it all comes down to population size, your pool of candidates can be a tiny fraction of your population compared to other countries but your pool will still be larger. Looking at it from a per capita point of view you aren't doing so hot, China and India are shit though.

I don't speak of the Olympics for that though, just the general culture.
I'd be willing to bet that (I also may have read this in a study/journal/magazine/website... for what that's worth), per capita, we are the most athletic... or the most involved in fitness. Fairly certain we either have that to claim, or at least show up on the podium.
Not that that is something for bragging here, as obviously that still doesn't cover the large number of bodies (population size is for sure involved here) that are disgustingly obese, but at least we're not even number 1 for fatties per capita. I think # of bodies total, perhaps, though the number of fat Chinese is rising... but Mexico took over the per capita figure. :D

Americans take everything to the extremes.

You should see how insane some people are with cross fit. Total amateurs doing Olympic athlete type workouts. Friggin lawyers, bartenders, and school teachers getting up at 4 AM to clean and jerk more than twice their body weight.

Then on the other hand you've got Mr and Mrs Diabeetus, with their 2.4 kids weighing in at a combined 901 pounds, consuming enough junk food to keep a west African cocoa farming village fed this year.

Beast mode or Feast mode, USA pwns.

The 2.4 kids weigh 901 pounds. How much more is it when you include the parents?

I love crossfit.

I'm not extreme into it, and at the moment (for the foreseeable future), really can't afford the membership for a good box, so I've decided to just stick to the regular gym and continue to incorporate crossfit, in the ways I can, into my regular routine.
For now, I've largerly ignored cardio (I hate the scratchy feeling and taste of blood when running in cold dead dry winter) as I've been focusing entirely on this gym routine. I'll cut and bring back the WODs and whatnot after I finally add some muscle mass this first go around.

Some of us just catch that certain bug. I don't want to be a gym freak, totally crazy about everything and rippling with deep visible veins everywhere.. but it may happen. :\
It's especially happening now, I think that a larger percentage of our population is kicking it into gear with fitness after seeing what doing nothing really gets us. We've got generations now that have scene how costly laziness can be to our health and image, and they're prepared to defend the line and not let it happen.
That's all I'm really into all of this for: be healthy in as many ways possible, so that when/if I'm 80, I still have the physique and energy to hit the weights, go for a run, play with any grandkids and whoop them into shape, and just generally have the vigor to still enjoy life.
If I'm mopey and rotting from the inside at that age, I'll ragequit. :p

according to that survey you're pretty average as far as inactive adults in the western world go. I haven't been able to find any other data.

as for cross fit, I've never been able to get into it as a civilian. We did it in the army when we were out at the range or in field because that's all we really could do, apart from the regular body weight pt we did 5 times a day anyway. It always made me feel a bit like some sort of fitness hipster doing it when there was perfectly good gym equipment right next to me.

another cool graphic. This is all the water on the earth, and all the air on the earth, in spherical form, next to the earth. Only question is, what PSI is the air at in this image?
