I've done that... with fresh asphalt. The two lane highway was being flagged, so down to one lane. I was there to inspect something within the on lane area and didn't want to let it go for some reason. So, I drove across the hot asphalt while it was still being compacted by the rollers -- my thinking was, "it's being driven on, what's the problem?". Don't think I did any major damage.

I think fresh asphalt is generally perfectly fine to drive on.
