Extreme social-conservatives (of positively Taliban levels) who would also be denounced by today's right as 'socialists', vs good-time-libertines who happened to favour an absolute monarchy and a system of arisocratic privilege, with the latter supported by Catholic nationalists seeking self-determination - even if it meant imposing absolute monarchy on everyone else - while the former were also imperialist anti-Catholic anti-Irish bigots, supported strongly in that respect by most of the Scots.
Perhaps a bit like trying to decide who are the 'good guys' in places like Syria or Iraq.
