They're all over the Pacific Northwest... most ski areas have lifts exactly like that, and they were often built in the 60s (and still around).
A lot of new fixed-grip lifts don't have the deployable safety bars. On lifts with safety bars, I'd say they only get used about 1/100 times, and that's mainly for the foot rest.
