Fuck that guy. From the video, he is purposely grabbing that tarpon by the gills so that he can wrestle it and get a nice video - to hell with possibly severely injuring or killing a 75lb+ fish. That isn't just some random dock - it's one of several areas in South Florida (most likely) that allow for tarpon feeding from the dock where the fish are protected and congregate due to that fact (if I had to guess, I would say it's Robbie's in Islamorada). Asshole should be kicked out and prohibited from return.

First thing I thought too, Shit, is that guy feeding tarpon sawbellies at Robbies??!

He's either very stupid, or very skilled. You don't mess around with tarpon or snook gill plates. That's how people get to spend the weekend at Mariner's getting their hands and fingers put back together!

So the tarpon died? What a dick. I wish he had got tagged by the plates now.

Why so much anger over some random fish?

Why don't you answer the question?

There was absolutely no reason for the fish to bite human's hand.

He clearly KNEW that the fish would because they have been conditioned to do that from regular feeding. All he had to do was release the feed and slip his arm out. He clearly baited the fish into doing that and then you go and say that there "was no reason." Were you even watching the same video?!

Yeah I was, the one where the wise and beautiful woman was screaming. :colbert: Seriously, someone please explain why there is an outrage over this fish? Is this fish endangered? Is it poisonous? I know nothing about fish so I am seeking some explanation.

Jeeeeeebus already summed it up pretty nicely:

the fish in that particular area are protected. it is also a place where people go to specifically feed the fish, therefore the fish are abundant and willing to get close to people because the fish are used to being fed, not grabbed by the gills and killed so some dumbass can make a video.

The fish are not "protected" by State law (well, they are, because if you catch them while fishing, you can't keep one absent a $50 stamp) - they are "protected" because Robbie's is a private establishment that, as a tourist attraction, allows patrons onto its dock to watch/feed the tarpon. The tarpon are there because they are safe - nobody is allowed to fish for them or otherwise harm them. They are well fed (both from people hand feeding from the dock and from scraps from filleted fish) and hang around because they are safe.

The asshole in the video decided he was going to wrestle a large fish by grabbing on and sticking his whole arm through the tarpon's gill plate which, in all likelihood, killed the fish. As was said above, the gill plate on a tarpon or snook is extremely sharp and the guy is fortunate he didn't bleed out on the dock. If you have any respect for wildlife whatsoever, the video/gif should annoy you.

The tarpon is the premiere sport fish in Florida, and those of us that have enjoyed catching them take special care to make sure they live to fight another day.
