So a shootout over "quality of life" crimes?

quality of life crime? you mean whitecollar crime?

Quality-of-Life Crime: Definition
The term, ?quality-of-life crime??sometimes referred to as ?livability crime? or ?nuisance
crime??refers to relatively minor, nonviolent, illegal behaviors that collectively undermine
people?s sense of well-being and public safety in an area. Generally, the term includes such
violations as: street prostitution, minor drug dealing, loitering to solicit or commit prostitution or
to buy or sell drugs, petty theft, aggressive panhandling, unlicensed vending, street gambling,
turnstile jumping, vandalism, public urination, graffiti, littering, noise violations, and so on. Most
such low-level crimes are legally defined as misdemeanors, petty misdemeanors, or ordinance
violations. However, some might actually be gross misdemeanor or felony-level offenses,
including for example, drug sales,1 more costly acts of vandalism, and certain repeat offenses.
Generally, only the lower level offenses would be handled by a community court.

Now you can see how those crimes (drug dealing, theft, and prostitution) can quickly turn into a situation that involves a shootout.

Well, did they say what triggered the shootout? Did the guy have outstanding warrants or drugs on him? Doesn't make any sense.

"Gonnella, part of the Neighborhood Enforcement Stabilization Task force, was on patrol when he and several other officers spotted several men standing outside the apartment building, in an area known for drug crimes and other "quality of life" offenses, Ambrose said.

As Gonnella and eight other officers approached the group of four or five men, one of those men, still unidentified, fired several shots. "

Guys, this link provided up there has some details on this story too... click the 7/14/2004 story. They also neglect to mention how many shots were fired or how many times the guy was hit. Perhaps the cops want to keep that info on the DL to prevent outrage from the community, etc. I find it strange they mention how many times the cops were hit (and how), but no mention of the suspect's injuries (like all the other links) other than it happened in an alleyway.

My money is on severe lead poisoning leading to death.

But what made him start shooting? Was he just stupid or was he hiding something?

^ Exactly. This happened in Newark, NJ. Most of the sh!tbags you see hanging out on the corners are not exactly overflowing with common sense and reasoning ability.

why????
IMO it's much worse when cops shoot innocent civilians.

You SHOT at a cop. Lemme repeat that bolded part. SHOT There is no excuse for SHOOTING at a cop, especially if their weapon is holstered. As a police officer, the only time you use your sidearm is when your life is threatened and you must terminate something. You are taught to aim at center mass, which is the torso. If you shoot at a cop, you are not an innocent civilian. Go elsewhere troll.

If you think they fired less than 100 rounds to hit the guy 44 times, you're crazy*. The national average for cops is 17% hit percentage.

*Unless they hit him five or six times, then all walked up and emptied their clips into the guy's body

I want to know where the guy is buried so I can open up a lead mine on that spot.

Rarely will occur, and you probably wont have enough time to grab a gun with the speed at which everything happens. That being said, if they do...I suppose I can't fault whoever tries to defend his home if it is the wrong address.

I grant you that point, but in this case the cop was wearing his uniform with full body armor. If you don't know it's a cop, especially when there are 7-8 other cops around him, that's bullsh!t.

But I figure if a cop accidently broke into your house during the middle of the night, they would try to make their presence known, especially if they don't see any signs of forced entry.

Of course they would make their presence known by yelling "police" or "warrent" or "get the fvck down or your dead." But at 3 am, if you are anything like me, you aren't exactly thinking strait.

As for just shooting a uniformed officer as he approches...yea, you get whats coming to you when you do that.
