When do they actually stop shooting ? I'd assume when he hits the turf but at what point does the subject fall to the ground if they were continuous shots ?

I'm thinking a UT minigun scenario here. ;)

This reminds me of the time those 2 bank robbers in CA had machine guns with full body armor (the one FX made a movie about)... and not one cop from any angle could get a headshot in...

I imagine they stopped when he hit the ground, but he's not going to stand there gyrating as he takes bullet after bullet. ;)

I suppose it would take a few seconds for him to actually go down. Assuming the officers had their guns drawn already they could get off say...5-6 shots in 3 seconds. One of our qual drills is to hit the target, slide-step back, draw, & fire 2 rounds to the chest and one to the head in 2.5 seconds. If the gun was already drawn...

By the time you got close enough to get that headshot you would be dead. You are not going to be all that acurate with a pistol at 50+ yards with automatic weapons fire coming down on you.

Most police officers don't get very much firearms training. The average joe can learn how to outshoot them by putting in some hours at a shooting range. If those cops had been replaced with high end special forces soldiers with the same equipment it wouldn't have been as easy on the bad guys.

Basically you have cops, most of whom are not stellar shots, trying to do a head shot on a guy with a very nasty machine gun. It's not like he was giving them much time to aim.

The suspect was taken to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police were attempting to determine his identity last night. "

If he was shot 44 times and still had the power to run through an alleyway, holy sh!t!!!

Me thinks there were about 44 shots actually fired.

Most of our training is reactionary, rather than focused on accuracy. 34% of police shootouts are from less than 3 feet away, and an additional 47% are from 3-6 feet away, so we train accordingly. We do have to fire 12 shots from 15 yards & 12 shots from 25 yards as well for qualification, but the most important aspect is our speed from close range.

If anyone ever does, go ahead and blast 'em.

Not that I've always had excellent experiences with our justice system, but most of the cops I've dealt with have been fairly decent (not all of them, though), and have to deal with so much crap on a daily basis. Trying to keep a community safe for the rest of us is important and if someone wants to shoot at one...well, I hope they get what they deserve.

EDIT:

Also, I can see accuracy not being the highest in a shootout. I imagine when the real bullets are flying AT you, just popping a couple off to keep someone under cover and not shooting at you for the moment is standard.....no little magic health packs in real life.

57% health might be fine in a video game. I don't know about for real though. :)

If I see them with a weapon I won't give them the chance to shoot at me. They'll have two in the chest + in the head before they can get me in the sights.

It doesnt give a number, but for the guy to be able to get up and run down an alley, he could not have been hit 44 times.

That's the 3rd Newark cop shot since the weekend. I'm sad to say I know the kid that was the shooter in this story. My girlfriend won't let me call his mother because I'm dying to tell her I told you so. It's pretty much her fault that he ended up like this.

The cops walked over to talk to the people, and the people started shooting at the cops.

Newark is such a slimepit.

My friend lives there and I feel totally unsafe even in my car. There are always young guys hanging out on street corners at any time of the day.

Strangely, there are so many nice old houses (mansions) there when it used to be a nice place to live.

Well, did they say what triggered the shootout? Did the guy have outstanding warrants or drugs on him? Doesn't make any sense.
