Jerky a good snack?

Seems to be relatively low in calories and fat with a very high protein content (14g in a serving). It's a little high in sodium unfortunately. Anyone else here eat it as a change of pace from energy bars, tuna, and the like?

Depends where you get the jerky I suppose. If it's homemade its probably a lot healthier then a slim jim. Actually I can't imagine homemade or organic would be too bad as far as getting your protein, but the sodium factor can be a little scary. But who knows there might be a kind that doesn't use that much. Afterall the sodium really is only in the marinade.

Yeah I would have to imagine that most store bought jerky is awful for you. I know my dad used to make some homemade, which probably wasn't too bad for you. But he didn't load it which a bunch of junk either. Sucks though, because jerky is awesome but I tend to stay away from it on most days.

I have it occasionally, but not very often due to the high salt content. The grocery store where I shop has an awesome organic, all natural turkey jerky that tastes fantastic and does not have all of the crappy ass chemicals in it; it's also lower in sodium than many other jerky products. They do a beef one as well, but I mainly eat the turkey.

So yeah, it's not part of my everyday snacking, but it's a nice treat every once in a while.

My brother in law makes homemade venison jerky which is incredibly good. He does some interesting teryaki mustard and peppercorn marinade for it. As far as I can tell it has basically no fat, no preservatives, and not much sodium (he doesn't use too much teryaki). I wish he made buckets of it cuz I could probably eat a a few pieces every day. Whenever I get a bag the entire bag is gone in a week.

Otherwise I cannot stand store bought jerky usually. It's often way too salty and not always cut well so I get some silverskin/tendons which totally turn me off. And p.s. slim jims are not jerky. It's like ground up garbage and fat in a casing. Wrap and slim jim in a napkin and put it in the microwave then look at the napkin. It'll make you rethink eating those.

Hmm after reading the responses to the OPs question, none really seem to answer his question....yes beef jerky is a good snack but when buying in a regular store, make sure you look at the ingredients and nutritional info. Jerky on average contains decent amounts of protein, usually 95-98% fat free, and typically has low carbs. One thing to keep in mind is that beef jerky has a decent amount of salt if this is a concern to your health and be sure to watch that not much sugar is added as some manufactures tend to add upwards of 10 grams of sugar per serving.

I used to eat jerky constantly but I find that it makes my teeth extra sensitive and gets lodged deep between my teeth, often where flossing cannot be effective, additionally, unless you chew jerky for about 30-40 seconds each bite, your body will take quite a bit of time to digest it.
