Whatever happened to the old journalistic adage that “if your mother tells you she loves you, check it out”? These days, too many reporters imagine their primary role is to police public discourse about the news — rather than, well, reporting the facts.

Witness the mainstream media’s rush to tsk-tsk the deluge of social-media speculation in the aftermath of Jeffrey Epstein’s death in federal custody. Within hours of the story breaking, writers at mainstream outlets went patrolling the Internet for “conspiracy theories” to debunk, usually with that tone of superiority and self-satisfaction that so endears the blue-check Twitterati to the American public.

To be clear I have no idea what happened to him and neither do you

Not true at all, we have quite a lot of an idea what happened to him. He was found dead in his cell in an apparent suicide and had attempted suicide in the recent past. That means suicide is the most likely answer.

Now if you have any evidence that something else happened I’m open to hearing it but until you do pretending that both outcomes are somehow equal is conspiracy theory nonsense. One has evidence, the other does not.

Lol did you not read that while piece? In trying so desperately to attack the media the author plainly lies about the contents of the Mueller report, saying it found no collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians when the report extensively documents collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians in plain language.

Why should we take his points on the state of the media seriously when it rests on a laughably and probably false premise?

I love how people always say the media should just report facts and then later get mad when the media doesn’t promote their factless conspiracy theory.

But this is actually serious. Bad speculation spreading as rumors has a way of turning into facts for a certain percentage of the population. Clinton conspiracies are a great example.

UC was just looking for a little confirmation, his feels were getting hurt here being asked about things like facts and evidence that he didn’t have. The NY Post opinion page told him didn’t need those pesky things.

Jonathan Swift-

Besides, as the vilest Writer has his Readers, so the greatest Liar has his Believers; and it often happens, that if a Lie be believ’d only for an Hour, it has done its Work, and there is no farther occasion for it. Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it; so that when Men come to be undeceiv’d, it is too late; the Jest is over, and the Tale has had its Effect…

Conspiracy theorists are going to think this was an assassination to protect all those involved in his crimes.

I love how people throw around the word conspiracy as if it is some loony imaginative, paranoid idea.

The fact is, most of the things in your life are some sort of conspiracy, from the food you eat to the clothes you wear to the the interest rate you pay.

If I conspired with my wife to get a good price on a new car, is that a secret plan to do something harmful? Yes it is, to the wallet of the car salesman and lot owner. So what?

Stating it is a conspiracy is like stating grass is green, duh don't bother stating the obvious if true, nor try to pretend you have some deep insight about the fact that people generally conspire every single day they are in contact with other people.

Uhm, no. What is being alleged here is a criminal conspiracy by a former president of the United States to assassinate a federal prisoner to cover up a history of child rape.

That is in fact a loony, imaginative, paranoid theory.

I think trump sending barr to off epstein is a more believable than the clinton one and it's still a hell of a reach.

Wait.. so it's the media's fault that you expect your baseless, distracting, propagandizing conspiracy theories to be accepted without the slightest shred of proof?

I expect investigative journalism to occur when things seem fishy but that’s not happening unfortunately

Obtuse, thy name is mindless1.

You're confusing the word conspiracy with the term conspiracy theory. It might be conspiracy that you want to get a good price on a new car, but it's not a secret (not even to the car salesman), and it's not a conspiracy theory like millions of airline personnel are all secretly involved in a plot to poison humanity. Surely you see the difference.

I mean either Epstein killed himself or someone else did. It should be relatively simple to see if someone else entered his cell.
Who took him off of suicide watch?
Why was he alone?

I think it was most likely a case of "give the man enough rope to hang himself" type of scenario

For those who didn't get my earlier reference, the burden of proof lies on those making the claims. It is not a valid argument to require that others disprove unproven claims. A conspiracy theory, more or less by definition, occurs when someone makes an unproven claim and then insists that it be accepted as true until others disprove it (while usually rejecting any valid arguments against it anyway)

Almost nothing is more irritating than someone who capitalizes random words when they type because they incorrectly believe it seems more "proper." Why the fuck do people do it?

So like, English is a Germanic language, and that style of capitalization is still common in German today, as it still often was in English 300 years ago when that was written.
