The United Methodist Church this week criticized the Department of Justice for the Trump administration's immigration policies of separating migrant families and denying asylum to those fleeing domestic abuse and gang violence.
The church also specifically called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions — who is Methodist — to “immediately reverse these decisions.”
In a statement written by the Rev. Susan Henry-Crowe, the church’s general secretary, the Methodist denomination argued that the policies are “antithetical to the teachings of Christ” and criticized the Trump administration for using the Bible to justify the policies.
“To argue that these policies are consistent with Christian teaching is unsound, a flawed interpretation, and a shocking violation of the spirit of the Gospel,” Henry-Crowe wrote.
“Christian sacred texts should never be used to justify policies that oppress or harm children and families,” the statement added.
The United Methodist Church joins the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Church in distancing themselves from or denouncing President Trump’s immigration policies.
Jeff Session's use of Romans 13 is a clear example of what's called "verse picking", which is intentionally picking out a verse to suit someone's immediate agenda, point, or motive. That same scripture was used to justify slave owners using slaves prior to the American Civil War, as some pointed out in this thread. But, as many Christians and Non-Christians here know, the Bible is not a, umm, short collection of books. Many of its teachings are repeated, and most of its concepts aren't that black and white. While the Bible does teach to obey the laws in your own land, its many teachings and concepts are also vehemently against slavery, injustice, the greed of the rich, being idiotic tools to each other, and you know, stuff we universally agree are bad things.
Here me out on this, and take the politics and religiosity out of this for a moment; this is about government officials not wanting to feel morally in the wrong. Because if I just follow the rule of law, then I'm okay, right? (Because the parents are immigrants and the children are American citizens).
I know God wouldn't stand for having children separated from their parents, but I also know He gave us a brain and would want us to go after the root (the heart) of the problem. Jesus isn't just the Son of God, he was also a very effective problem solver, and was well known for solving long-standing social problems and providing real solutions to the people. That's part of what it means to "be like Jesus".
So with that said, I think the real questions we should be asking ourselves are things like this:
1. Why are millions of immigrants pouring into the United States, and is there anything politically or economically we can do to help those in their home countries?
2. Is there any area of opportunity within our own process of becoming an American citizen that we can do to help? Meaning, is it something within our own laws that's holding people back?
3. Because many of the immigrants coming to the United States are of a farming background, is there any jobs programs we can create to help train them and solve our own infrastructure problem at the same time? Meaning, can we turn this problem into a solution?
But separating kids from their parents? C'mon, we have brains.

For Sessions and his ilk that like to wear their religious beliefs on their sleeves, citing scripture is usually their last line of defense when their personal beliefs that become national policy gets rolled up like a newspaper and then have it smacked and whacked on the top of their heads like the wayward mutt being caught peeing on the new carpet.
It looks as if Sessions is going to have to refer to scripture on an increasing basis as his decisions on national policy become more and more unpopular and as his job becomes more and more untenable commensurate with Trump's increasingly erratic bizzare behavior.
A Texas sheriff's deputy accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl threatened the victim's mother into staying quiet about the assaults, authorities said Sunday.
Jose Nunez, a 10-year veteran of the Bexar County Sheriff's Department, was off-duty when he was arrested early Sunday. The 47-year-old faces a felony charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a news conference.
Salazar said investigators suspect that the girl had been assaulted multiple times over the course of several months.
The girl's mother is an undocumented immigrant, Salazar said, and Nunez told her she'd be deported if she told authorities about the assaults.
