Jeep Liberty vs. Nissan Xterra vs. Honda CR-V...

I'm getting one of those within the next few months. Which do you prefer and why? From reading the Edmunds reviews, I'm leaning toward the CR-V, but I don't like the idea of not having a V6. Has anyone here driven one? What did you think? My price limit is going to be about 24,000.

Well, I won't be going offroad. The reviews at Edmunds said that the Xterra was competant offroad but handled poorly and was underpowered. I haven't driven one around, so I don't know for sure. I will be test driving before buying but I'm still just exploring my options. Of the three, the CR-V seems the most practical... but the Xterra looks the coolest.

If you do off-roading crap - Xterra

Xterras are nice, but the 3.3L in them is not up to the standards of the other new Nissan vehicles.

Even when I test drove the SC version, the power was barely adequate.

Hell, if you are looking at a CR-V, why not consider a Subaru Forester? I think it's a much better bargain. I'd also choose a Mazda Tribute over The Liberty and the Xterra, especially if I had no intentions of going offroad.

The Xterra looks the best, but the CR-V is the most practical.

The Subaru Forester is kinda cool, I really don't know much about Subaru reliability and stuff though.

Who makes their engines? Them?

Equal power, better back seat space, better milage, cheaper, better ride. Only thing you are missing is a true 4WD system. But if he's not going off road that's not a big deal anyway.

The Xterra has a ladder frame though, so it *should* be stronger cince the CR-v and Liberty are both Unibody. I do not feel comfy driving a unibody vehicle off road. I want my doors to actually work.

I've put a few thousand miles on a CRV, it was way underpowered to cruise the highways. Felt good @ street speeds, but a struggle on the highway.

Haven't driven an Xterra, but it should be a good choice.

In anticipation of the diesel Liberty, I drove a gas powered version a few weeks ago, very impressed;

1 vote for a domestic SUV...

but, they're not in the same class?
cause the CRV would have WAY better mileage. but it's not as big.. it shouldn't really be compared.

Actually, the CRV has better back seat and cargo space than any of them I believe.

The diesel will be a 04' model

Build quality was OK, I'm not a great judge of car quality, I just buy the car with an engine that impresses me. (1 V8 diesel GM, 12 year old Maxima V6 & I4 TDI VW Golf, hope to replace the Maxima with a TDI Liberty next year or another TDI VW)

Say, petroleum fuels become scarce or non existant, you could be cruisin around on a tank full of vegetable oil

The CRV is more or less a car. Its very roomy but has no power. It has that full-time all wheel-drive that comes in handy when it rains. Driving on the highway is weird, atleast as a passenger. I feel it almost straining when trying to go fast or what have you. Its got a lot of nice compartments and is somewhat comfortable. Getting into the trunk is kind of difficult. The main door swings open, making it difficult to get in if someone is parked behind you. However, the glass does pop up which makes it easy to drop things in, but difficult to get out. They really shouldn't have put the spare back there, it would have been nicer either inside or underneath.

As always, drive all three and see which one you like the best. I can only comment on being a passenger in the CRV since I've only drove it once around the block or so...
