Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy?

I'm trying to decide which one to play to kill some free time...I've never played any of these old Star wars games other than X-wing vs Tie fighter and KOTOR2.

Which one do you guys recommend? Good story and decent graphics are important.

Well, neither is going to have "great graphics" by today's standards. In fact, I think they both use the same engine (someone correct me if I'm wrong here). Eitherway, I prefered Jedi Outcast but I'd suggest you try both. If story is your main concern, Outcast is better imo.

However, Jedi Academy had better variety in terms of lightsaber combat/force powers while Outcast is strictly linear with very little choice in the matter. Having played both, I think I prefer Outcast.

I never played outcast, only academy but I really liked it.

I've been looking for mods on academy but there are so many I can't decide

Outcast was an excellent game, but I had a major problem with it. The levels were incredibly long and drawn out, often looking identical with the player trying in vain to find some key to open a door in some obscure corner to progress. Academy's format was much better, a handful of shorter 'missions' between longer levels that focused on the game's main plot. This made Academy more interesting to play through and it kept me interested longer because of the appearance of progress.

Story wise, both games were decent. They both follow the stereotypical Star Wars story line or Jedi/Light side vs the Sith/Dark Side with the player ultimately choosing whether or not to follow the light or dark paths after a certain point. In the official Star Wars canon, I believe the light side endings were official.

I wish they'd make a true Jedi Knight game again, I'm sick of the consolized trash LucasArts produces now. The last decent one was KOTOR1. Everything since has been garbage. Especially all the crud that came out after Episode 1.

Makes me want to play through these games again.. Outcast was definitely the better of the two, but Academy was decent. You'll probably be able to pick them up for pretty cheap nowadays so why not just get both?

I thought Academy was immensely boring and seemed rushed compared to Outcast.

if you've played KOTOR 2, you should really play KOTOR 1. Much better game IMO.

That's another choice...I just figured KOTOR would take up too much time.

Outcast had a better story and I liked its duels better as well. Most of Academy feels like a bunch of disconnected levels put together, although they did have better variety than those of Outcast.

As someone said earlier, you aren't going to have great graphics in either case. Academy looked dated even for its time. Although that doesn't really detract from the games.

Don't forget to play it on the hardest difficulties and watch the limbs fall :)

I enjoyed both games equally, but you should play Outcast first because Academy comes after it in terms of story.

Definitely Outcast first. I liked it better in terms of story and characters (Lando!), but Academy got much better toward the end. The only thing I didn't like about Academy was the herky-jerky scripting for combos. They almost always worked, but there were some delays for them in my case.

Outcast is extremely faithful to the Star Wars universe. You will find bottomless pits with no guardrails EVERYWHERE (the middle of a space ship, on a planet, in the middle of a city, etc). Disgustingly frustrating to get into a sweet saber duel only to be knocked off into the abyss by a clumsy stormtrooper.

Honestly, you'll fall. A lot. Everywhere.

I recall Academy being a button masher when it came to lightsaber combat. Outcast.

I still fire Academy up once in a while. Outcast had much better SP, Academy had much better MP. I consider them one game though, Academy is sort of an extension/expansion of Outcast.

Outcast is one of my favorite games, can't count the number of hours I spent in MP.

Never played Academy, but Outcast (SP) is among only a handful of games that I replayed several times.
