This is based on model year 2000 vehicles. This study measures the number of problems per 100 vehicles after 3 years of ownership (only original owners are surveyed). They've changed the format a bit this year; the report used to be issued in the fall and covered 5 years of ownership.

It's a better indicator of long-term reliability than the Initial Quality Study, although the two usually mirror each other fairly closely (some notable exceptions are listed in the press release).

Enjoy!

Anybody notice Volkswagen's position in the list? Yikes! Those coil pack and electrical issues they were having really hit them hard! Audi didn't do too well either. :Q

Also, I thought it was interesting that Jaguar and Saab, which don't have great reputations for reliability, placed higher than BMW and MUCH higher than Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.
Saab did really badly on the '03 Initial Quality study... has their quality been neglected by GM?

Hmm, GM and BMW on roughly the same level. Buick in 3rd place in second graph, interesting.

Though in the 3rd graphic, the table, they talking about reliablity or most popular?

Looks like I will be sticking to Honda/Toyota...

My response was only directed towards Shantanu who routinely calls Japanese vehicles "jap traps" or "jap crap" or whatever silly little moniker he can think up.

Oh, BTW Toyota also stomps Nissan, BMW, Subaru, VW, and all Korean auto mfg!!!:p:p:D, since you asked ;)

Well they have fewer cars.
The problems become more numerous with more cars in the market.

Ok, good. :D

Now, also mention what these have in common: Subaru, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki?

That's right, they are all Japanese plates. Oh, and they also ranked lower then your beloved GM

GM has a huge stake in Subaru. Isuzu is junk, no one cares about them. Who even buys Suzuki vehicles?? Mitsu is crap IMHO.

When people discuss volume Japanese cars, the only ones that matter are Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

General Motors is the only domestic manufacturer to rank above the industry average in the corporate rankings, with 12 models finishing in the top three of the segment rankings, second only to Toyota Motor Sales with 13.
oh boy that sure is a stomping!

I said domestic(S). GM is only ONE out of three (Ford and Chrysler are the other two).

Taken as a whole, The top three Japanese companies OWN the top three domestic companies....PERIOD. End of discussion.

Top 3 Japanese (avg): 221
Top 3 Domestic (avg): 287
