For those who think that Japs is a racist remark look it up in the dictionary.

Japs: A person of Japanese descent

No one ever refuted that it did not mean that a person is of japanese descent. That still does not make the word any less derogatory.

Extensive dictionaries will cover all racial slurs and slang. That doesn't take away from it being a racial slur or slang. Most modern dictionaries will state that it is considered a racial slur though.

Sh!t is also in the dictionary. That doesn't mean it would be acceptable to throw it on someone.

loogie,

I understand your desire to illustrate the point, but that was over the line.

I work with Japanese people everyday and they use the word themselves. I've never heard them refer to it as a offensive term.

Jap has only recently become a racial slur. It has always been a slur.

Many people in past, soon after WWII, had great hatred for the Japanese based on wartime experiences. Some people still do.

They call each other that but don't forget the Bar Scene in the movie "Rush Hour"

Pop quiz!

what do you think when you see this :

"I don't like Jap. cars, I prefer domestics."

a) the person never said anything about Japanese people in an offensive manner, or anything at all about people at all, but was talking about CARS in a CAR thread and is just too lazy to type out "J-A-P-A-N-E-S-E".

b) the person must be a racist who hates Japanese people, and I disagree with his point of view so I'll try to humiliate him and call him a racist even though he never said anything at all about Japanese people and he was talking about CARS in a CAR thread, but I'll stick my unwelcome 2 cents in and accuse him of being a racist because he must surely hate Japanese people and be a white trailer trash redneck just because he doesnt love wonderful Japanese 1 liter 4cylinders. As a matter of fact, I'll publically call him white trailer trash, even though he's the supposedly "racist" one! Lets change the subject from "CARS" to "Valhalla1 must be racist because he doesn't like imports!" Also when he said he doesnt like "euro cars" either that must mean he hates all european people as well! Lets stir up flames to piss him off because in reality, I'm Japanese and I don't like white people, so I'll take it out on him!

I'll give ya 20 guesses!!

I don't think that would warrant a lock. The language is not being used in a derogatory manner, but rather, in a discussion of meaning. I was only pointing out that there are words that are offensive to some that are still listed in the dictionary. My opinion on the matter is that the words themselves aren't offensive, its the hatred of the person that makes the word offensive.

I work with a couple of young Japanese guys and when we were in a conversation about TV's he told me the Jap ones were better. I have also heard the word used on TV in an ad for a car company.

I don't get it either. Subsituting a short word for something makes it sound racist. Oh well..
It's like calling some European guy a Euro Guy..so what?

I can totally agree with that, after all it is just a word that is made up.

Words are words, meaningless until we give them meaning. If you don't use this word in a deragatory manner, then you should feel comfortable in the fact that you're not a racist. At the same time, you could also be sensitive to the fact that there are still morons out there who do use this as a deragatory remark and because of that some people may be (overly) sensitive to it. Yes some people might get overly offended or upset, but who knows under what other circumstances they have heard that word. We recently had a bunch of white frat boys jump a group of asian frat boys and kick the crap out of em while calling them "chinks"(I hate to even type the word) and stuff. So now maybe you encounter one of those asians sometime and call him beloved patriot just joking or whatever cause you have other asian friends that you've joked like that with, I think it would be understandable for him to freak out and get upset. There's no such thing as a bad word, just a bad meaning behind the word.
