My thoughts is in the first sentence of what you quoted. Considering the Chinese are poor record-keepers we won't know the entire story...

Yeah, we will never know the entire story, so its best not to criticize the Japanese right? Thats the biggest crock of shit I ever heard. Why are you so scared to say that what they did in Nanking was not OK?

I'm not sure what you're trying to prove with those pics. It changes nothing.

I didn't think it would with someone who refuses to denounce Japan's atrocities in Nanking. Also, judging by the time stamps in your post, its obvious you didn't watch the video either.

Political Correctness FTL

By the way, Nick1985, that video is full of lies. I stopped watching when it said that China had never invaded a foreign country. They occupied Vietnam for 1000 years.

I'm not trying to be politically correct. It's just that there are multiple sides to a story. But I won't stop you for being insistent on only seeing one side. Do whatever you like, just don't try to tell me what to think.

Ah yes, you are so smart. You can see all sides of the story, your intelligence is too great. Do you refuse to criticize Nazi Germany for concentration camps as well? Afterall, there are 2 sides to a story.

Also, how do you feel about the Japanese "comfort women"

Not going to come against them on that either I suppose? There are 2 sides afterall...

Then please clue us in on how what the Japanese did to the Chinese and Taiwanese is acceptable or maybe it was revenge or retribution etc.. was it?

To me, the only real victims in a war are those abandoned by their governments (European Jews during and before WWII would be a good example). Everyone else is fair game. I'm sorry man but this is war we're talking about. It's no corporate takeover or football game. It's war.

At my university if you wanted to learn Chinese history you had to learn the Japanese language. This is because Japan keeps good record. China does not. I do not know all of Japan's side but I know even less of CHina's side because a lot of what comes out of there is propaganda. In fact, the best I can get is when Chinese and Koreans sue in Japanese courts.

As for why Japan attacked it's neighbors, that has already been explained: imperialism. It's the same reason why Western countries attacked some of those same nations, not counting peoples in other parts of the world.

actually who cares if they complain about Hiroshima or Nagasaski?
At the time war was hell and they made their beds!!

I agree...we shouldn't have stopped after two. Tokyo and Kyoto SHOULD have been next after we tested the bombs' potential on smaller cities.

So you refuse to denounce the holocaust because its war, so its fair game.

Gotcha.

I'm no expert on it, but from what I have gleaned over the years, what's in the OP is certainly part of the story. Left out some details for sure, but it's also likely our take on it also leaves out certain details too.

This is actually an interesting flipside to the German side and the recent thread on the Illegality of Denying the Holocaust. Clearly Japan hasn't taken the same stance towards their atrocities the way Germany has.

Ain't that the truth. Anyone who apologizes for this behavior has issues.

Its one thing to rape and murder millions of people, its another to deny that it even happened.

Do you denounce the holocaust?

Do you denounce the rape of Nanking?

Both?

Only one?

I'm a private citizen. I don't have to denounce shit for you or anyone else. With that said, the abandonment by the European governments of their most vulnerable citizens to a foreign army is sickening. I'm shocked that many of the "victor" escaped a well-deserved punishment.

War is hell, so anything that happens in it is OK by you?

Oh, and it's also OK to later lie about what you did and did not do during the war?

Alrighty then...

It works for politicians...and according to the USSC, lying about the medals you may or may not have earned is fine as well...🙄

Is it OK by me? It depends which side I'm on and what power I have. Let's face it, when men go to war, the pen is pushed aside and the swords come out. Only the victors will truly determine who gets punished. Such is reality.

War can never be fought nicely, the more you kill the quicker you win, that's the deal and it won't change.

You'll note that civilian casualties are not counted by the military (at least not ours) in todays world because they are irrelevant. What is relevant is enemy dead count.

Note that this is an explanation, it might not be something i fully agree with at all times but it is the purpose of war, to reduce enemy troops to 0 by any means neccessary.

BUT, doesn't Kyoto hold more significance to the Japanese people? Isn't it the "old capital?"

(It's been nearly 45 years since I spent time in Japan)

For some reason I too thought Kyoto was one of the targets, in fact the primary target of the raid that hit Nagasaki. It was Kokura though, I checked. Kyoto was on the list of recommendations, but was rejected due to its historic and cultural value (contrast that to Japan's treatment of China and Korea!) and was never even fire bombed.

The Japanese have a long history of minimizing their own evil whilst emphasizing that of others. And I completely support the bombings, but dropping additional bombs (had we any ready, which we didn't) after the Japanese announced their intention to surrender would have been nearly as bad as the rape of Nanking. As it happened, by exercising just enough force to break them totally and then rebuilding their society we created (actually helped them create) once of the best nations in the world. How rare is the nation of which the worst that can be said is their tendency to gloss over their own past misdeeds?

Why do you have a different standard for Japanese than Muslims? Why should Japanese have to recognize their extremists but Muslims not?
