Just because in America a celebrity is to egotistical and selfish to ever own up to any mistake they made, and the crowd rewards them for it, doesn't mean its the same in other countries. Just because a self-prescribed act of atonement doesn't fit into your book of actions, doesn't mean its the same of other people. Stop shoving your view of things onto the rest of the world.

LOL wow.

Okay man. I get it, American's are too egotistical to own up to their mistakes in a batshit crazy way like this girl.

"Self prescribed act of atonement" which is also an emotionally unstable response to a "mistake".

Her management putting this video out there says more than enough. Yes, public shaming and humiliation is a form of bullying..whether or not you choose to accept that fact. Passive as her management seems to be, the buck stops with them when it comes to PR.

Apparently, the own her professional and personal life...so somehow, you are telling me they are not accountable for what is going up on their fan pages on behalf of their "property".

Your comment about America really helps cement that image of the pimple faced, middle American white kid with a hard on for Japanese pop culture.

You're talking all this emotional crap over a girl who purposefully broke the rules of her contract to her company and saying that the company should go out of its way to help her out in her time of sorrow.

......

Please try to comprehend. She chose to break the rules, and she chose to apologize in this fashion to save her job.

And her management company was totally okay with her posting that video on their fan page. The don't "owe" her anything...but you know..they could be professional and privately deal with an issue like this instead of letting a disturbing "apology" video like that go up on a page they manage.

You know, ethical business practices.

That's mostly the case when people white knight for Japan like that.

*scratch that*
Better yet, I bet he can't ask to buy one of AKB48's shitty singles in Japanese either.

And I bet you didn't watch the 100 Top Song countdown the other day. If you even took a little time to do some research, youd see that these girls are not bullied and their fans are extremely supportive.

The only bullying comes from people who hate AKB, and now those who don't even know who they are. AKB fans are very defensive of the group, and the girls in it.

You're absolutely ridiculous. Uhohs already said the proper response:

This is *her* decision. Her management company does not owe her anything. She could have put a stop to the shenanigans by not having a boyfriend.

Its the *rules*. If she wanted a boyfriend, she could have nullified her contractual obligations, pay what she owes, and go about her life. She instead tried to have her cake and eat it too. She got caught, and *she* decided to do this publicity stunt to show sincerity in her apology and hopefully not get fired.

But hey, what are multi-million dollar contracts anyways? People shouldn't have to actually abide by what they sign as long as the other person signing is one of those evil big companies! 🙄

an insane decision that comes about only when raised within an industry that makes ridiculous demands on weight, behavior, lifestyle (friends, families), and that caters to a fanbase of unhealthy, sex-starved, middle-aged perverts.

...just saying.

Instead, the video is posted with the tagline "AKB48 峯岸みなみからのメッセージをお届けします。".

As if somehow that statement is going to add something positive to what happened.
It does, in many cultures apologizing and showing remorse for messing up/breaking the rules/letting down your fans is a positive and honorable thing. 😛

What the hell are you rambling about? This is exactly what I was talking about. You have no idea what's going on, yet you take an incredibly hostile position without even knowing the situation.

Management didn't force her to cut her hair. Other girls have been in bigger/more incriminating scandals in AKB and merely gotten slaps on the wrists. She CHOSE to shave her head, which ironically is making the issue bigger than it was, while also bringing a lot of hate to AKB.

Says the guy with the Japanese Professor in (presumably) America. If you want to learn something about culture, go to the source. You are the one pretending to know anything about Japan while really just forwarding whatever your professor says. Who knows, she could hate Japan. She left after all, right?

If anyone is doing public shaming, it is the tabloids. Blame them. And where does that come from? America. Don't you remember seeing Britney's shaved head on the tabloids? And what was our reaction? Ridicule, laughter, and shame.

This girl chose to shave her head and her own. She chose to release the video. She did it as an attempt of an apology. Nobody who was meant to recieve the video is shaming her. They accept her apology, and support her regrowth of her career.

The only ones shaming her are people like you. Taking away her will by saying she was forced into it. Cheapening her career by saying AKB sucks and you hate it. Degrading her as a person by saying she doesn't even appear human anymore, just because she did something culturally alien.

I guess shaving your head is part of that too.

:whiste:

Management can own my life...but making sure I seek help in a moment of mental anguish relating to a mistake is not one of the parts of my life they own.

What will you say next?

LMAO.

This is great. Keep going. Please....

You really do know so much about my Japanese Professors and what I do and do not know about Japanese language and culture...all the while, foaming at the mouth for a Japanese girl group like some troll from 4chan.

They left Japan because they don't like Japan.

Oh my god, you are just filling so many stereotypes of Japanophiles right now.

There are (presumably) no Japanese professors in the US...because that would be....absurd.

This isn't even really about Japan, this is about a company not knowing good PR. This would be a non-story if this video wasn't on youtube. They could have stopped this at shaving her head. America, Japan, or Mexico. My response would have been the same.

Completely agree.. Maybe they shouldn't take that job.. Or if they didn't want to do it anymore, maybe they should return the money they're getting paid and leave.

But I guess following contractual procedure is too much for some people.. Getting something for nothing is the way it should be.

I would like to nominate this thread as a candidate for the annual ownage of the year. I can't believe somebody's arguing with uhohs, our resident Japanese pedobear approved girl band expert.

Yes, standards are put on behavior and lifestyle. These people are supposed to be idols. Girls are supposed to look up to them. Within that, though, is a large variation of behavior for all kinds of girls. But at the core, they for the most part have a good heart.

Isn't this better than American celebrities or Korean celebrities? Where personal lifestyle and behavior isn't an issue, yet physical looks are. The countries where tons of people, both male and female, get a crap load of surgery just to be acceptable in the industry.

AKB girls don't have to get all the surgery. AKB is about accepting a person with all their faults because they are trying their best at what they do and putting serious effort into. A lot of AKB girls are average looking. Many are below average. Some have crooked teeth. Some are chubby. Some muscular and boyish. But none of that matters.

And you stereotype all their fans as middle aged perverts, but that isn't true. I know young men who think of them as sisters, old men who think of them as daughters, and plenty of girls and women who are also AKB fans.

You don't have to like the group - thats fine. But don't pretend like you care about this girl. You just want another excuse to bash what you don't know or don't like.

And yet, outside of odd people such as yourself, most people don't have a problem with it. Those that do won't remember outside of a month or two. AKB48 will continue making insane amounts of money, and the girl that shaved her head to keep her job will continue to get her piece of the pie as opposed to being fired.

PR seems to be doing fine. But you seem to have difficulty grasping simple concepts such as responsibility. :colbert:

Nobody is saying that following procedure is too much. Yes, she breached contract.

But is her "Managers" not obligated to tell her "that is enough" after she shaved her head and make this insane video?

Posting it on Youtube should have been out of the question.

This is terrible PR and terrible management.

Even when Britney Spears lost her shit, her management company went into to support her mental well being.

I guess shaving your head is part of that too.

:whiste:

Yes, it is. Didn't you learn that in class?

LMAO.

Lol okay. Go back to class. You are just like a kid who has taken into to Psych and then goes online analyzing the pscyhe of people on the internet. Stop pretending like you know anything about Japan. Stop pretending like you know anything about AKB. Just using your faux outrage to flex your mad nippon knowledge you learned from yesterday's lecture.

I guess shaving your head is part of that too.

:whiste:

you seriously have never heard of people shaving their head to show remorse or grief? 😵

it's mostly an asian thing these days, but it's in western culture and it's roots as well. you know the whole shaving your head and wearing sackcloth.

Right because the Management company has no authority to tell her that an apology video on their Official English page on youtube is not necessary.

Instead, the video is posted with the tagline "AKB48 峯岸みなみからのメッセージをお届けします。".

As if somehow that statement is going to add something positive to what happened.

I guess she controls all of their social media accounts. Management totally knew nothing about an emotionally distressed girl who just shaved her head in apology was also uploading an extremely disturbing apology video to their youtube channel...

🙄

Wow the confusion is never-ending, you're a japanese-reading/speaking lesbian black woman from detroit?

You sound really bitter than you can take up a second language.

Albeit, I am not as gung-ho for Japanese Pop Culture as you. I do have profound respect for the language and the culture which is why I have stuck with these hard ass classes for the past 5 years.

I assure you, I am not "pretending" as you say. I just wish you'd stop perfectly acting out the stereotype of the kid on the internet with the anime avatar and a hard on for Japan.

:colbert:

And actually, yesterdays lecture was about 伝統芸能 (でんとうげいの&#12358😉. Its traditional Japanese theater and its really cool. If you want, I can scan the reading from the textbook for you.

But you probably won't be able to read it. :|

You want picture proof that the textbooks are mine too? LOL And who uses "nippon" to describe Japan anymore. Stop feeding into the stereotype, dude.

Wow the confusion is never-ending, you're a japanese-reading/speaking lesbian black woman from detroit?

Where did the lesbian part come in? 😛

I've spoken Japanese on the forum before to our resident Japanese dude. The one who lives in NC, I can't remember his name right now. :<

What is his freaking name.. TYamamoto or something like that.

Cracking the fuck up right now!

You can cry, laugh, "crack the fuck up", whatever you like. It doesn't make you any less wrong here, and any less stupid. 🙂

But please, continue responding to posts that completely dispose of your silly notions and idiotic thought processes with something akin to this:

Honestly, I don't think anyone outside of Japan has any right to judge. It's their culture and whatever it is is working since their country is civilized. We should look at ourselves before we look at others and criticize the way they handle their own shit.
