I spent a summer in Hawaii when my cousin was attending Hawaii Pacific University. I went to the beach all the time and I didn't notice this oddball behavior?

Your dog sounds so fun. Corgis are like that, which is why I want one next. I remember walking around many a times and they would just run up to me and I'd pet and hug em. I haven't met a corgi that isn't playful and tries to get your attention. I wouldn't listen to Baloo, the Japanese culture is very uptight and introverted.

edit: Playful doesn't mean he's the alpha dog.

They are probably just being polite and don't want to actually touch the dog. I find it very rude and annoying when people let their stupid dog run up to other people. keep it on a leash and close. I wont be rude but I really would like to push the thing away. Can't stand it when a dirty dog comes into my space and stops me from walking or gets slobber and crap all over me. As much as it seems impossible to you and others to understand and you'll want to make us dog haters out to be Nazis or something but NOT EVERYONE LIKES DOGS! A lot people do actually view dogs as dumb and annoying. Try to be more courteous next time and keep your pet away from others.

You should not allow your dog to run up to people like that. You can change that by not rewarding the dog when he does that to you, and redirecting your dogs attention when you see him begin to approach other people. The only time you shuld let your dog run up to you like that is when you have asked the dog to do so by telling it to come to you, not when the dogs decides to come to you without even asking. You dog is the alpha in your home.

You have no clue what you're talking about.

Is that the ocean behind the dog / porch in the back of the picture? If so, wow my envy for you has just skyrocketed.

Your envy would decrease substantially if you saw his bills for everything...

Living in Hawai'i is expensive.

Not much worse than Alaska. (Except the housing)

Does Henry like Maui better than Alaska? (at his height, going out for his "business" has to be MUCH easier than in a couple of feet of snow!)

He used to be a snow dolphin. ;)

I wonder if it has something to do with being brought up in a family that doesn't show much physical affection such as hugging? My family doesn't hug and I sometimes feel awkward petting a dog that comes up to me....

I think most places have leash laws now. If there are other people around, keep your dog to yourself.

The "horrible beast" looks pretty friendly to me. I love dogs but, I understand some of the posters here being afraid or discomfited by a dog running up to them.

One thought that no one has mentioned yet is that until recently (our lifetimes) there have been very few dogs kept as pets in Japan. It would be like having a wombat run up to you at the beach in Malibu. Okay, maybe that's a bad example, I wouldn't be surprised if a wombat ran up to me at Malibu but, you get the idea. :)

Most of them look pretty friendly till they rip some little kids face off. There are 4.7 million people attacked by dogs every year in this country because of irresponsible dog owners who don't keep their dogs under control.

And you always hear the same thing, "he was such a friendly dog, I can't believe he would that." No one ever says, "he was a vicious animal, I'm surprised he hadn't already mauled a few children."

Since some people like dogs more than children, after the dog bites someone the dogs brain may be dissected to make sure it doesn't have rabies.

I live in an area with a high Indian immigrant population and my apartment complex is probably majority Indian. They all seem to be scared shitless of our 10 pound chihuahua mix, who is very friendly. They seriously will stop dead in their tracks when they see him, with their eyes all wide, or walk WAY out of their way to avoid him. The mothers run over and grab their children's hands. The one exception is one neighbor who says "look at the doggie!" to her kid from their balcony, but still gets scared if we meet together on the ground. I keep him on a short leash and make sure to smile and give them as much space as possible, since there's no point in making them more scared than they already are.

Just a cultural thing, obviously.

Lovely dog.

/em virtually pets dog.

(Could use some flash/foreground lighting in the pic, but, that's just a technical note..)

The polite way to show people of a foreign culture "how something is done around here" is often just by simple example. E.g. get your dog to come back to you, and when he does, reward his good behavior with locationally/culturally-correct petting.
