Japanese people don't know how to pet a dog

I've lived here for a year and a half now and I've observed a crazy truth of life... Japanese people don't know what to do when a dog runs up to them.

My dog goes to the beach twice a day. He's a bit of a slut so he has to run up to everyone he sees and say hi. He loves people. Once in a while he runs up to a Japanese tourist. How do I know they are from Japan? I just do. Hawaii has a huge asian presence and after a while you get good at recognizing which asian country someone comes from. The japanese generally don't speak english and they take lots of pictures. I'm not trying to play up a stereotype but that's how it is...

So here comes my dog...

The funniest was the virtual petting... where the japanese guy tried to pet my dog from 6" away... never actually touching my him... just moving his hand around the shape of my dog without touching him. It was all I could do to keep from laughing my ass off. My dog looked at me with this WTF look that was absolutely priceless...

And I've seen the opposite where the japanese guy pounds my dog's head... *smack smack smack* good doggie! The girls just giggle and run away. So does Henry... Without the giggling...

So what is it about asians and dogs? The reactions are priceless.

perhaps fear, who knows and who cares as long as it makes you laugh and harmless then it's all good.

Dude...what happened to that poor dog's legs? :D

Does Henry like Maui better than Alaska? (at his height, going out for his "business" has to be MUCH easier than in a couple of feet of snow!)

Is that the ocean behind the dog / porch in the back of the picture? If so, wow my envy for you has just skyrocketed.

Your envy would decrease substantially if you saw his bills for everything...

Living in Hawai'i is expensive.

It's only funny if ignorance isn't involved. Wrong culture.

I think you are mistaken. it isn't that they don't know how to pet a dog, it's that they recognise the dog's behavior as inappropriate, and choose not reward the bad behavior. You should not allow your dog to run up to people like that. You can change that by not rewarding the dog when he does that to you, and redirecting your dogs attention when you see him begin to approach other people. The only time you shuld let your dog run up to you like that is when you have asked the dog to do so by telling it to come to you, not when the dogs decides to come to you without even asking. You dog is the alpha in your home.

wat?

Friendly dogs want to be friendly with people, why would you change that? As long as the dog doesn't jump on people and responds to his owner's commands to come back, then there is zero problem.

It's always delightful to see somebody full of shit and full of themselves. The omega dog in a pack is the most playful and most commonly initiates play.

I agree. We're not talking about a dog initiating play, brown eyes.
