Japanese manufacturers ready to throw their subcompacts into U.S. market

copy and pasted for work people

With fuel prices on the rise, Japanese manufacturers are looking to throw their weight behind selling fuel efficient subcompacts in the U.S. market. For instance, Toyota has killed the Echo and is importing the Yaris/Vitz in an unadulterated hatchback form. A sedan variant will also be produced, but the significance of this move by Toyota should not be ignored. Additionally, Nissan is introducing the Versa below the Sentra and is expected to bring the subcompact Scion-fighting Cube to American shores in 2007. Honda is also bringing its Fit hatchback to the party next spring or summer, and has even announced plans to produce the vehicle in the U.S. if it is popular. In a similar move, Mitsubishi has brought up selling a U.S. manufactured Colt in North America.

I've NEVER been able to figure out why people ever bought that crap in the first place. Obviously they weren't satisified, or they wouldn't have become three times as large over the next 30 years!

What's wrong with small cars? My next car (if all goes as planned by Dec/Jan), I will be purchasing a Mazda 3s Hatchback. It's a smaller car than my 11 year old Camry. I like the hatchback versatility and it's a nice lookin' ride.

Why whould I buy some hulking, massive beast if I don't need to?

Not another one.

Eventually your social security checks won't be able to cover fuel costs.

Because continuous improvement has allowed the car to evolve into something larger and safer, but with similar fuel economy. People bought them for the 40 MPG fuel economy then, as they do today, .

What's wrong with small cars?

If they're so great, they would have STAYED small, but they didn't. Why?

Because continuous improvement has allowed the car to evolve into something larger and safer...

And yet, here we are looking at new tiny-mobiles. Are they going to grow again too?

Stop trying to use circular logic. THINK CURRENTLY. What is wrong with small cars? Why do you have a beef with them?

What's wrong with wanting something "smaller" like a Civic, Corolla or Mazda 3 over something larger like a Camry, Accord, Impala, 300C, etc.?

My GF drives to school everyday and then back home. It's just her driving. She doesn't need anything larger than her Civic EX.

So again, what's your beef?

Hey, everybody knows you need 3 tons of steel to transport 200 lbs. of human safely... 😉

Stop avoiding the it and just answer the dang question. It's not that hard. What is your problem with today's small vehicles in comparison to other vehicles on the road TODAY?

In a slight defense of Ornery, that Yaris isn't a civic or mazda3...it is far worse.

This would be really useful for people in more metropolitan areas. Hopefully the safeties will be up to par of what we expect from honda/toyota

How is it "worse?" It's just smaller and cheaper. If someone wants something that's small, cheap and gets good gas mileage, what's the problem? The Yaris gets 41/51 according to CanadianDriver.com

subcompacts just rub me wrong, just a tad too small.

oh fifth gear had a new eps yesterday🙂

anyone notice the 1990-1989 top gears appearing on the torrents? it was like fifth gear..but more boring back then lol🙂 sad

The people that used to buy their small car grown old, to keep the market share they keep growing the same named car to a bigger size and have a new car for the younger generation.

Same thing that's wrong with motorcycles. My brother once totaled his Cricket in an accident... with a Harley!
