Actually, the reasons why they don't invent so much is because their society is more communal and less individual compared to the US... in the US, creativity and individual expression is important, so that gets people developing ideas. In Japan, being a part of the group is most important... so they don't have as many free thinking ideas... but instead focus their attention and strength on what they currently have, and try making it better.

One doesn't make the other any better... thanks to the Japanese, a lot of our stuff are better and more efficient.

A good example of this would be the way they treat creativity in the realm of art. When a child takes music or dance lessons, the focus is not on individual creativity but on technique. Mastery of technique is considered a mastery of the art.

Yep, excellent example.

Damn red neck Southerners. Have you ever walked up to a Japanese person and asked them if they think they're superior to you? Well, do so before making such a statement.

Yup that is why they have rankings for everything. Most of you are familiar with karate and judo where they have different color belts but in Japan, they have individual rankings and tests for lots of things like skiing for example.

Hell no... some of the hottest girls i met were Japanese or had Japanese blood in them.

no way. i went to japan man. youre probably confusing them for koreans

met a whole bunch of korean chicks locally. pretty damn hot in general. chinese chicks are alright. in hk theyre pretty hot. but japanese?! PBBBT. in japan and locally, all japanese ive met are pretty dirtay.

Japan doesn't look down on the US. Look at their loanwords for example. A majority come from English and katakana is starting to overthrow Kanji in everyday literature. They even have a hotline for people to call in case they're not sure what the new slang means.

They're westernized for more than just business reasons. Learn more about their culture before deciding.

Oh, and as far as being perverts...that's just because they have a lot of repressed sexual feelings and they come out in different ways.

For example, hugging family members is not very common among the traditional familys. Body contact and expressing your true feelings are culturaly repressed and inappropriate much of the time.

they were terrible people in recent history. but for the past few decades, they have been peaceful and helpful neighbors. i would like to visit japan one day, they sure seem like very civilized people.

ironic how the old war-goers/expansionists are now peaceful (japan, germany, china) are now less aggressive, whereas the historically peace-preservers have recently gone all out (usa, UK)

My class is watching a video on Japan and I'm just amazed at how advanced they are. Supposedly 99% are literate whereas the US is 96% and China 75%. They're also considered, according to the video, "the most intelligent people in the world". That made me frown.

What do the Japanese think of Americans? I've heard they look down on most of the world which kind of pisses me off.

Just so you know, if you go to Japan with an American accent, you're "exotic" and you're definitely going home with a hottie that night.

Well.... Having worked much with the both sides, I'd say the amount of respect and contempt that exist between the two sides are about the same.

true dat, and the s&m Brits, pedo and beasty and fetish Europeans... look at wastland.nl, orgy party.

So many ignorant people. Why do I have feeling these people commenting have never been to Japan or studied it other than their American WWII history lesson.

I for one would love to visit Japan and I do plan on it.

I suggest you take a class on East Asia, especially on their political economy. Just amazing how these countries have advanced. Note: NOT "Asian American Studies" please.

japan doesnt have overt racism, they have the highest life expectancy, high GDP per capita despite the economy, lowest crime rate, so they feel their way of life is a little better than most of the world

No overt racism? Bullsh!t. Maybe it's not codified in laws, but there are places where Americans, or any foreigners, are not welcome at all. That being said, it's not a pervasive feeling. There are plenty of people who are very friendly, and I've certainly met some great locals here.

Their life expectancy is decreasing. The Okinawans live the longest of anyone, and since they are modernizing, the average life span has been steadily decreasing as they lose the "traditional" ways of living.

I think that means they're xenophobic rather than racist.

By default any person who is not of Japanese descent is a foreigner in terms of race. So, the definition is really the same. The distinction is too fine to make a difference to me.
