Japan pushes whale meat..

Schoolchildren in the western coastal district of Wakayama are now being offered an unusual addition to their lunch menus. Whale.

We've been practising whaling since the beginning of the 17th Century," Tetsuji Sawada, a local education official told the BBC, "but the tradition is dying out."

To make the dish more appetising, the whale is being fried in breadcrumbs, or minced into burgers.

All of the whale meat sold in Japan comes from the 400 whales or so that Japan kills every year for "scientific purposes".

But the rest of Japan only became familiar with eating whale during the 20th Century, as modern ships with harpoon-guns became available.

Hmmm... I wonder how many burgers you can make out of 400 whales...

EDIT: "Most of Wakayama's 490 schools, which have nearly 100 000 students, are expected to serve whale burgers" hmmmm

probably because the whales are dying out. at least that's what I learned from Star Trek 4.

 to Japan. There is an international moratorium on whaling. NO ONE WHALES, except for true scientific purposes.
I find it disgusting that whaling is the one tradition they are attached to so strongly. Isn't Samurai and tradition? And why aren't they training ninjas? Their Geishas aren't even prostitutes any more!

Ninjas would only kill more whales. They'd kill everything. 🙁

you didn't see that in the article, the words 'scientific purposes' is in quotes, denoting that no one actually thinks that there are valid scientific purposes for killing these whales.

They aren't killed for scientific purposes and the whole world knows that.

i thought heard somewhere that most whales had made a come back, and that most are not nearly as in danger as they were decades ago.

Some whale species can't make a very good comeback because of the lack of food. Seafood is getting more expensive for us, same for whales.
