Yesterday I watch most of a movie on on of the local DFW TV channels. It was one that was released in 1960. "The Gallant Hours" with James Cagney. A Story of Adm William F. "Bull" Halsey.

The interesting part of that show was that every time the word "Jap" was used in the movie it was bleeped out!

That is just too funny. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when that decision was made.

This PC crap has got to stop.

If it bothers you that much, go rent it and you can watch it uncensored.

It should bother you that someone decided that speech appropriate to an era can now be censored simply because today one might take offense at it. That is a dangerous road you are on.

That is pretty bad.

They used to run Blazing Saddles uncensored, now they don't. Not quite the same.

And there is no reason it should be censored. It was written that way not to be derogatory but to emphasize in a humorous way stereotypes.

That seems to be lost on today's politically correct people.

This is why TV is not the place to watch movies, on top of the "edited for time" crap.

Reminds me of the ending to "Thank you for smoking" where William H Macy's character runs around replacing cigarettes with benign items in old movies. When asked why he is changing history he responds "We arent changing history, we are enhancing history".

Bunch of morons.

I actually did not learn that the term was offensive until my late teens. Then again, not many Japanese people around my home town, but Chinese (their sworn enemies) were not uncommon.

The local veterans museum back home uses the term on most of the WW2 displays. Usually a few WW2 or Korean War vets around there tell their stories to visitors, doubt anyone would make a scene about it.

Remember that the morons are the networks fearful of their advertisers' money walking away.

The point is it shouldn't be taken out of art because some people will find it offensive, the same with swearing.

WTF?!

I saw a complaint on a BBC discussion site some time ago, because in a TV series called "The Inbetweeners" there is a scene that shows one of the characters testicles and there was an american complaining about it! Come on.... It's just a bollock.

They bleep out black people saying "awesome dude" too, even though there's no racism involved and the only ones offended are racists who are mad that they can't say "******".

Wtf... I guess 'jerries' is derogatory now too and must be censored? Gotta be fair you know.

Pathetic.

OP, I grew up in a world where Jap was commonly used with no particular insult or derogation meant. Much, much later, I learned that Japanese-Americans took exception to it as being offensive, so I learned to stop using it, because I'm a civilized adult and I know that there is no reason in the world to needlessly offend others.

I just didn't need to stamp my little feet and bleat about my FWEEDOM.

You could take the high road, be an adult, and do the same, you know.

Right. Let's change historical art in order to mold it based on today's sensitivities. /facepalm

I'm sure you agreed with whacko-fundi John Ashcroft covering up nude statues in Washington? After all, breasts offend some people.
