Jailbreaking.... What's the big deal?

I put off jailbreaking until last week. I used the website jailbreakme.com and jailbroke my iphone 4....

DL'd a few apps and a ton of themes. Love it... why is this such a big deal?

Because you can do stuff to your phone that you couldn't otherwise. Things like SBSettings and unofficial tethering are great. Once you find apps you like, you'll never be able to use a stock phone again.

Because Apple refuses to allow me to do this;

can somebody name a few essential jailbreak apps? I bought iconoclasm for $3 but still haven't figured out how to get more than 4 items on the dock at the bottom.

got a few games, and played w\ the trials of the tethering / MyWi.

Its all Lockinfo. It has plugins for calendar, weather, mail, notifications, twitter, multiple to do apps, RSS readers, etc.

Yup, it also has a plugin for 2do which is a very good AppStore app. That way I have a constant reminder of what I need to do whenever I see my screen.

For me, MyWi is enough reason to Jailbreak. Being able to wirelessly tether my laptop on the go has been extremely useful. The $20 I paid for MyWI has been more than worth it.

MyWi is invaluable. I went to visit family thinking they had wifi but they didn't. I didn't want to bother, mywi and my laptop wins.

Lockinfo is nice! After my trial, i'll probably splurge on the 5 bucks!

Does it work with Bluetooth or USB? I just use either BT or USB for tethering (non-jailbroken), but then again my laptop is a Mac.

Anyways, I would jailbreak if I had a need for it, but I don't really. Normally I'd do it just for the hell of it, but what holds me back is the fact that a friend bricked an iPhone trying to jailbreak, and even when successful, it's always a pain to have to repeat the process after each OS update.

It uses wifi, and multiple devices can use it at once. It acts like a wifi access point.

From my experience you can't brick an iPhone jailbreaking anymore. I've royally screwed up an update and have always been able to get to recovery mode. It may have been a problem in early jailbreaks and the 1st gen phone, but I haven't heard any more brick reports from jailbreaking than I do from normal OS updates.

That's good to know. Yeah, the guy who bricked the iPhone was on a 1st gen, pretty early on. Still, it'd be rather annoying to have to jailbreak every update, and like I said, I haven't had much of a need.

If I couldn't tether otherwise, then I'd jailbreak in a heartbeat.

after jailbreak ? yes. After unlock? yes

If you put in a different carrier sim ? you will need to adjust things of course!

I did not see any apps from the app store on those repo's.

Bittorrent is not advocating piracy.
Jailbreaking is not advocating piracy.

Buying a gun is not advocating violence?

I'll remove the links as i do not wish to piss off the mods - but in light of your comment - google.com would be the biggest piracy site on the planet with your logic.

If you add that repo, Cydia even says that adding that repo means you'll have the ability to pirate stuff (don't remember the exact wording). Also, even those in the iPhone Dev Team and other jailbreakers don't want to have the ability to add that repo to Cydia.
