Jaguar X-Type, what is everyone's opinion on these?

Just looking at different options for a new/used car purchase coming up soon. Has anyone ever owned or driven a Jaguar X-Type? Despite the reliablity stories I hear about Jaguar, I can't help but be attracted to a V-6 luxury sedan with AWD that can be had for around $15K with 30K miles. I know that Jaguar depreciates faster than any other luxury brand, but I do like the looks, standard AWD, and the pricing on these used cars. What do you guys think about them?

They're not very reliable.

Better off getting a new or used Lexus IS. Much more reliable.

I like the vehicle a lot and wouldn't be worried about reliability too much, assuming you have some experience working on cars.

We came very close to buying one, but when went to take a look, it was obvious that the previous owner beat the crap out of it.

It's the AWD that really has me interested in this car. Aside from reliability opinions and depreciation, on paper you really get a good value for your money.

what model year goes for $15k ?

I would be interested in one for that too. I doubt the reliability is that big a deal, and nothing beats a Jag for coolness.

Yea, and normally Id be interested, but I want something that my gf (probable fiance, might-be wife) could drive as well. I wanna take her TSX out some days :D Last time I tried to teach her to drive stick, I got a severe whiplash and I thought my engine was gonna fall out fo the car. :) So, for everyone's sake, including other drivers on the road, I'll get an auto.

Besides, after driving a manual for so long, I wouldnt mind an auto. I love manual, but my morning and afternoon comutes involve too much stop and go in the city, and I cant stand driving a stick through that type of traffic.

False sense of security perhaps...? I've driven in the snow in RWD, AWD, and FWD, and there is a significant difference with the AWD in the snow. The main reason is weather conditions.

You might as well get a Taurus and glue the Jag badges on it. I bought a new car right before these came out in late '01 and when I heard about the Xtype I was pissed because I might have bought one instead. That was until I saw one in person....they're very small and it looks like a Taurus. Very unimpressive...I think it's definitely a situation where you're paying for the name.

The X-Type cannot be compared to the Taurus. They're two completely different cars.

I am in the exact same boat, though I'm willing to spend a few bucks more (around 18k or so) and get a used Audi A4. They are more reliable, the dealers are easier to deal with, with the price you can find it certified (ie, with an extended 100k/2 year warranty). And its AWD system (Quattro) is a lot better. The interior is awesome and it's just a comfy car. I need something to start going to my new job, and the M3 I have now sucks in the snow. Besides, I'd rather put the mileage on a normal <20k car.

I like the A4's interior better, but in terms of outside looks, I like the X-Type more. Im not quite sure how reliable the X-Type is, but I have heard horror stories from VW and Audi owners and id rather take my chances with the Ford owned X-Type.
