Jaguar X-Type, what is everyone's opinion on these?

My dad has had an X-Type in his stable for about three years now, after buying it as a gift for my stepmom. Both of them really love the car, it's given them zero problems, remains fairly quiet inside even on the highway, and is quite driveable. While I think it's a good car... I'm not sure I'd have paid MSRP for it, but it certainly beats a run-of-the-mill Ford by a good margin. The only thing I hate about it, having been tasked to do this in the past, is that the cream-colored leather seats are friggin impossible to clean! They hold dirt/smudges like nobody's business. The only other quirk is that, when you turn the car off, the a/c fan doesn't shut off immediately... it takes a few seconds to "wind down" and it just doesn't sound normal for a car.
 
the x type is probaly the worst among the sport sedans

here is how I rank them: 3 series > audi a4 > lexus IS > c class > x type

Oh, Id never buy a Jaguar, let alone an X-Type brand new. The only reason Im considering one is because of low milage 2002-2004 models that can be found for roughly $15K. I just think it's a lot of bang for your buck. I'd prefer to have black leather, but I have yet to find one with such. All of the X-Types I've been looking at, regardless of outside paint color, have that cream leather interior.

Yeah, for $15K-ish, it's a bargain I think. But now that I think about it... I've never seen one in black leather either. Even the black X-Type my neighbor has, is cream inside (which looks FUGLY if you ask me).

I agree with you. It just cant keep up with the rest, and if I could find a 3 series xi , or an A4 quattro, or even a c-class 4-matic with 30Kmile or less for $15K, Id take it over X-Type. Given all of the things I want in a new/used car (luxury, leather, AWD, sunroof, etc), I dont think there are many other options for my price range.

My Ford SVT Contour was the most fun to drive car I have ever had. A luxury AWD version would be a nice car to have - although the reliability rep is a concern.

That car was always good looking IMO. Looked faster than 200HP.

The performance of the WRX appeals to me, but I cant stand the 2.5rs and WRX's interior. It just uncomfortable and incredibly cheap IMO.
 
Whatever you do, avoid Lexus like the plague. Pure crap from what I hear. I rented an XType back in 2003, it was fun. It was a nice place to visit, but I wouldnt want to own one. Also BMW depreciates quickly, the interiors dont hold up well and the electronics are buggy.

Just walk. It does a body good.

The X-Type cannot be compared to the Taurus. They're two completely different cars.

Actually it's based on the Ford Contour, well the frame is at least, but it is quite a bit different,
 
I have a 2003 X-Type 3.0 5 speed manual. From all my research there were a lot of initial problems with the 2002 US models that got cleared up and the problems have dramatically dropped off.

I have had a few problems with my X-Type though, one of them being the Piston was jammed on the rear brake caliper (probably my fauly by letting the pads wear completely down) and so I replaced that myself. I bought the part used for 100 dollars, but every where I found that sold it new was 350+.

That's the biggest downside I would point out is that it is very expensive to buy parts for and expensive to get serviced. The only place that would do a brake job on it (I ended up doing it myself) was the local Jaguar Dealer and they wanted something like $400.00 to change the rear pads and callipers. Also the only place I found to do an alignment was the dealer and their "special" price of the month was $150.00.

Ford window regulators are not very reliable at all. We replaced those very frequently in the shop, mostly in newer cars. Had a 2001 Lincoln LS once come in for 3 window regulators at once.

Imho, i would go for a Lexus. More of a brand chachet, more fun to drive, and the build quality and reliability si the best. I've seen 2002-2004 Jag S types with loose and falling out interior parts, rattles in general. Never a problem with Lexus.

not as good as the XJ

and the trouble is they tried to make it look like the XJ, so it ends up being a XJ only photocopied to like 60% the size

last time i saw a modern jag on the hard shoulder was............ hmmm never

jaguar come 2nd only to lexus in the TG surveys here in the UK, they are reliable cars, much like the bigger XJ is a reliable car.

granted jags new XK isnt that reliable, but then again, that was all new. something always goes wrong with all-new cars.
 
You can impress the ladies by saying "Yeah, my Jag is in the shop" as you open the door for them to get into your rusted out 80s econobox.
