Well tweek I dont think IB-E will be that much of a step up from SB-E or at least i haven't seen any proof. The question Is will you have the money for it when it hits stores?


you can get a IB 3770k +mobo+16gb ram for about $480.

The SB-E cpu +16GB ram +mobo will cost you about $900.

prices might be lower depending mobo,ram and store/site.

In cpu hogging apps that Q6600 has no balls nor does my q9550 vs IB so I think you would be better off with a IB quad or HW quad.


I assume your dad does DAW as well? if so have you tried doing a project on his comp?

at this point, getting the 2011 platform is nuts imo. Haswell will more than likely have the throughput of a "5 core" SB, giving TX alone. You really gotta know that you need that one extra core for something..
Untill we see realworld benches of HW, investing in 2011 right now is nuts.

You are looking at having about 3x your current CPU processing power so why are you increasing your RAM by 8x have you bothered to check if the programs you are using will need that much memory or are you just guessing what you need to upgrade.

I can see you being disappointed when you realise that you could have got 75% of the performance (perhaps even higher) of this rig you are building for 50% of the cost.

What are the bottlenecks in your current setup? Would spending money on a SSD to hold your current projects increase productivity? Is bulldozer a valid option? Can you offload the work to a GPU? How well does the work scale with core count?

You need to answer some of these questions before you dive straight in and announce you "need" a 2011 hex core chip and 64GB of RAM. Because taking into account your usually limited understanding of hardware you will end up wasting your money on hardware you don't really need.

Please don't take offense at the bolded part I am simply trying to make a point....

If so if there is a specific test you can help me to setup I will gladly run it on my main RIG Tweakboy. I will even stick a 5ghz OC on it if you insist on going that high. Then if we can find someone with a 2011 setup maybe we can put some numbers to the increased cost involved in setting up an enthusiast rig and see if it would be worthwhile.

I use Sonar X2 Producer x64. Opening up couple tracks already takes up 1GB..... how about if I want to add 30 computer generated tracks with 80 plugins ...... Trust me 32GB will come in handy, and with 64GB I can load all my Kontakt samples for instant usage...That is why I want 64GB.

Depends on project but I will be using probably avg 20GB RAM on my bigger projects. So 32GB was a no brainer. Then I said might as well fill up all the dimm slots ,, so I went 64GB ya know....... plus the price is incredible.

No problem, was just offering to give you some sort of idea about the performance increase you were looking at but I see you already pulled the trigger on a 2011 setup.

Maybe you could post a thread showing the increased productivity between your old rig and your new setup by running a large project on both rigs and noting the time they take to complete the work.

I need RAM to preload my Kontakt samples,,,,,,, My last project had to be held back a little cuz I had 15 real time synths going and computer couldnt handle it, going to 100 percent CPU,,,,,,, and crashing.......

Guys Im getting 2011 for quad chennel memory and 64GB RAM and the fans and heatsink that comes with it.. military grade.... if I get a Ivy now,, im screwed when IVY E chip comes out cuz I need a new motherboard.

THe situation Im in I can enjoy my 3820 then later on upgrade to Ivy bridge E ,,,,,cuz its going to be a 2011 socket
