Thanks to guyver01 for refering me to this cool site: myip.org. :D

Here is my Dynamic DNS address:

neocs.myip.org

...just add the port # which is:

See you all tonight.

Actually (Just an FYI),
You've setup a VHN (Virtual Host Name) that auto-resolves to whatever IP you're assigned.

Just in case anyone else wants to setup something similar without having to worry about people being updated to whatever their IP is.

For instance:
My ISP has me on DHCP (Dynamic IPs) as well, but when I went to register my domain name I had problems because I they wanted a SPECIFIC IP. So the answer was getting the VHN and using URL Forwarding.

Anyway, Good for you! Now you can CS in happiness!

You've actually gotten a dynamic DNS entry, not a dynamic IP address... You already had a dynamic address...

Right?

Myip.org gives you a static address while your cable service like roadrunner gives you Dynamic IP address which change now and then.

Myip.org will keep track of my roadrunner Dynamic IP address...when it change..Myip.org will follow the new Dynamic IP address.

All you need to know is this: neocs.myip.org

...which will never change.

Still confuse?...Take Network+. :D

That's what I figured you meant, but your title says you signed up for a Dynamic IP address.

You forget, I do ISP tech support for a living.

I take it this is only useful if you host a server? Please splain to a newbie.

wyvrn:

This saves him from having to make the "My IP address changed, PM me for the new one" posts. Basically all the end-user needs to know is neocs.myip.org, everything else is handled behind the scenes.

Typically with DNS services, you would only point a domain to a static IP address. Otherwise, whenever the IP changed the DNS entry would be useless. This service dynamically changes the DNS entry when the IP changes.

The only concern I'd have is what happens during the DNS propagation process? That typically takes a while... Do you have to specify a myip.org DNS server as a tertiary DNS server, or what?

Nope it is not an ip address, it is a host name, but I see what they are doing. I guess I was asking what this would do for a normal old dialup user such as myself.

I think the answer is nothing. Cool service if you run some sort of server though.

:) :D You're welcome Neo.. don't forget to check your lease time (either thru WINIPCFG or IPCONFIG/ALL) and update the site when the IP lease expires.

guyver: so? I can point 4,000 hostnames at the same IP and they will all ping perfectly. and it isnt registered as far as internic is concerned, it is just an IN A record on the nameserver for myip.org, dont get me wrong these are great services, but supposedly IPv6 is supposed to handle dynamic hostnames natively...which will own.
