3DFX Voodoo2
nVidia GeForce
AMD Athlon....

I've seen a lot of hardware hype over the years - and people clamoring to buy them... but NOTHING compares to the Conroe madness I'm seeing now.

...well... Voodoo2 is awfully close.

Agreed.

It's a little over the top

Athlon64 was definitely overhyped though. AMD claimed that we'd be better off with 64-bit computing. Lot of good that did. How awesome is Windows XP 64-bit? Not to mention Intel released the EE editions to counter it. The P-D was also cheaper than the X2 in terms of dual core offering.

I should have been more specific, within the last 2-3 years or whenever they stopped producing Northwood chips and began producing Prescott chips.

Except the thing that historically it's always a race. AMD pulls ahead with Athlon, Intel pulls ahead with Williamette, AMD pulls ahead with AthlonXP, Intel pulls ahead with Northwood, AMD pulls ahead with Athlon64, Intel now pulls ahead with Conroe. Nothing special about it.

Yes, and paint thinner is cheaper than wine.

I thought that the Voodoo 5's were pretty close with their dual GPU's.

wasn't Northwood a generation ahead of T-bred and Barton?
P3 was much better then K6 but K7 was pretty good.
Turion is ok, but P-M is better you're right.

it's just that Intel has now come up with the fastest CPU in everything. and it won't cost an arm and a leg to get one.

It is proving to be one of the best viral marketing campaigns in a long time. The best spread themselves with very little help, because the product is just that good.

It is like when a restaurant with excellent food opens in your area. How long does it take before someone turns you on to it? Conroe is like that restaurant :)

Viral marketing?
C'mon, the Conroe is an excellent cpu which is deserving of the hype. It simply sweeps AMD across the board in benchmarks and is still a good buy even after the price cuts.

The A64 was still slower in encoding (until the x2) and only marginally faster in some benchmarks but the conroe is significantly better in almost all benchmarks.

See what that nvidia fiasco did? It made you immediately attach negative connotations with the term.

definition of viral marketing

It does NOT require "plants" or other underhanded tactics. When you tell a friend about the great food at the new restaurant, you are viral marketing :)

This is getting bad...
I ventured over to Hardforums, and ever thread in the Intel forum is on Conroe...

Conroe this.. and Conroe that.. "I'm buying a Conroe!" "What ram for Conroe?"..

"Will Conroe Wipe My Ass and Flush the Toilet Too?"

:)
you get the picture

Too bad it looks like there will be some SERIOUS supply issues with the Conroe 2, unless perhaps you buy a system from Dell. But screw that crap.

I don't see a lot of hysteria hype except on this forum. Nothing I see so far is bad for the consumer. Competition is good.
