I've Quit Drinking Soda, For The Most Part...

It's a bit strange. I used to drink a lot of sugared soda. NutraSweet/Aspartame didn't agree with me, and the Diet Rite soda with the Splenda tended to be very expensive, and didn't taste all that great. Turns out Splenda may not be that great for people now, either. Anyway, if I had a drink in my hand, odds were it was a can of Pepsi, Mountain Dew, or Dr. Pepper.

Sometimes I would drink up to seven or eight cans of soda a day, or a two liter bottle. Since I've quit drinking it now except in the case of eating out, or having nothing else to drink at someone's house, I've found my taste for it flagging. My water consumption has gone way up, however. I go through a case of twenty-four sixteen ounce bottles of water in a couple of days. In those cases where I do get a soda to drink with a meal, I find myself wishing I had water with me instead. I even went to the store for the sole purpose of getting a soda on one occasion, and left empty handed as nothing was appealing.

The weird thing is that my taste for fast food has pretty much disappeared as well, since I quit drinking soda. I still get it, though it is mostly the force of habit now. I will be weaning myself off of that as I did the soda. I don't think the food quality suddenly dropped since I quit drinking soda, so I am guessing it has something to do with my tastebuds. Is that possible?

How'd you quit? I'm a soda fiend and I can't stop drinking them. I'm down to two or three per day, but I'd like to cut it out completely.

Maybe electoshock therapy?

I did stop for about a week after I had a dream that drinking sodas gave me Altzhiemer's disease.

I initially weaned myself away from soda by drinking THIS. It's sweetened with Splenda, though. Now I'm pretty much just drinking plain bottled water.

Diabetic? Maybe you might want to get that checked out.

Oooh, man. When I eat Splenda I get sick. I can't ingest any of the artificial sweeteners. They all either give me a headache or make me really dizzy.

I'm avoiding Splenda now, too. That was the only thing I consumed regularly that had Splenda in it. The co-worker that introduced me to it gets headaches from it now, too. Now I just grab cases of Arrowhead bottled water at the local grocery store when it is on sale, or at Sam's Club.

My GF and were discussing this the other day. I've never really liked pop.

How the hell can you drink eight cans a day! That's absolutely disgusting.

I've weened my self of pop by going from regular, to diet, to now none, and personally can't really stand the taste, I'll take water or fresh juice anyday, as well weened myself off of fast food, all of this from February of this year and I'm still going strong, and with a regular workout schedule and eating everything in moderation have lost 20 lbs :D

I used to drink 144 cans per week. Honestly I just like the bubbles.

I still drink about 100oz of water per day.

Water > Pop. Took me a while to give up my pop habit too but I am so glad I did. Now I can't stand to drink carbonated beverages at all. It's either water, fruit juices, or beer.

What have you heard about splenda?

It causes shrinkage of the thymus, swelling of the liver and kidneys, calcification of the kidneys, and some other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head. I was discussing it with a friend last week that had researched it, I will see if I can find the other information he was telling me about. The other concerns had to do with the chlorine in Splenda, primarily.

LOL at everyone saying POP, until i was in my teens I hardly heard anyone call soda, pop but I'm in south FL so thats all thats said around here.

As for me, I drink water much, much more than anything else. I used to only drink soda also, but same for me, I tend to get soda whenever I go out to eat more than anything else and also every once in a while.

The chlorine thing is bunk. Table salt is 50% chlorine!

I'm intereseted in anything medical you've seen, though.

His sudden need for lots and lots of water. My dad had the same symptoms and turned out to be type II diabetic.

Get some nice juices like pineapple juice and try milk with oyur meals as well. I find that pineapple juice works well for my taste with almost any meals

I'm drinking about as much water as I drank soda. I think it's part biological need, part habit from always having something to drink in my hand.

I am a Diet Mountain Dew ADDICT. Most people hate it, and cant even stand to see me drink it, but I NEED IT. I have slowly started a program to get away from pop, first stage is down which was quiting sugared pop. Second stage of quitting altogether has had its ups and downs, I was REALLY close at one point, but it seems I always end up regressing back to my old ways.

It should be noted, that the best Diet Dew is from the bottle, and then second from the can, and it CANNOT be cooled by ice, it must be cooled in the can/bottle to get the best taste.

When school starts I will probably start cutting back in hopes of quiting, but we'll see about that.
