I've never used a spreadsheet...

People seem to be surprised by the fact that I've never used Excel, or any spreadsheet for that matter. Why? What possible reason would I have to use a spreadsheet? Is it strange for a 24 year old CompSci/physics guy to have not used a spreadsheet?

Yes, it is weird. Have you no data to organize or crunch? Heck, you can even do finite difference modeling on a spreadsheet.

I don't use spreadsheets to keep random data on my home computer, at least, not normally.

But I've had to use Excel forever. My first computer class in junior high, or maybe my second class, Advanced Computer, had a lot of Excel and teaching the tricks and stuff.

And I've used it for class and other stuff, and I know how to do most of the stuff I'd want to do with any data I want in a spreadsheet.

It seems odd for someone around my age to never have had to use Excel even to just learn the program.

Yeah that's weird. I remember having to use spreadsheets for physics/chem lab courses. Mind you those were ancient DOS-based spreadhseets but spreadhsets nevertheless. NOt the ideal data crunching method but it is quick and dirty.

I use them for personal purposes too

Yes, but as we all know Quattro Pro for DOS is still the best spreadsheet ever made.

i use spreadsheets for keeping up with plenty of things. usually its scheduling and classes and such, i add on to my spreadsheet each semmester for what my class schedule will be and change what classes i need/have taken

i have maybe a handful that i like to keep up with, tops, but they are damn handy for some things.

I have my entire CD collection listed on a spreadsheet. I started with database but then I moved away from the Kaypro and couldn't move the files over.

Like what kind of data? I have a calendar for my scheduling. As a student I don't make much money and don't have a lot of debt so my finances couldn't be simpler. I'm really not sure what I would use it for in day-to-day life.

I'm surprised you haven't used Excel for any of your physics classes. I did a lot of my data analysis/graphing with Excel for physics labs.

I usually start up stuff on spreadsheets but once it becomes a "database" I just code a php front end and use mysql to store the information.

I often use it as a calculator or graphing tool, works great for that.

How the heck do you get through physics without having at least one lab where you needed to graph some data? I know Excel isn't the only program to do this, but it's ridiculously ubiquitous (sp?).

I've graphed a shit load of data... it's called graph paper + pencil.

I would highly advise you to become familiar with a spreadsheet program. Heck, OpenOffice is free and includes Math which is a spreadsheet program. It is used A LOT in the business world.

Yeah, I used to do that until I didn't have to anymore.

Edit: I used to have to make my own graph paper too. There is a specialty type of graph paper (log something something function something) used to plot well drawdowns in dimensionless units. Shockingly, no one ever thought to market the paper so one had to trace each new sheet from templates. Life is more better now.

Oh, I get it now. This is another one of your threads where you claim to not know/do something that is common for most normal people. Just stop already.

This is why you use excel.
