I've learned my lesson. Only Crucial memory from now on.

I just got my new Epox 8K3A+ board (KT333) last night. Since I decieded I was going to get this board a few months ago I sold my 3 sticks of 256 MB Crucial Pc2100 memory. I replaced it with 3 sticks of 256MB KingMax pc2700 5ns memory.

Well after installing my new board with the KingMax memory I realize that my memory can only run 166mhz at cas2.5 with only the most conservative BIOS settings. Weird I thought..maybe 1 of the 3 sticks is bad. So I test each one seperatly. Same thing with each. None of them can even reach CL2.

At this point I pull out a stick of 256MB Crucial pc2100 from a second machine. I test it out and it runs perfect at the most aggressive memory setting at 166mhz and CL2.

I read reviews about how KingMax Pc2700 memory is suppose to be really good, but I really don't think it's possible all three sticks of mine are bad.

Crucial I'll never leave you again 😉

Crucial also have very good customer support, they tested my Crucial ram free of charge even when we both knew it may not be the problem I had with my PC,(btw it was a faulty AMD T-bird in the end)they also took the time to try and help me fix my PC ,so their tech support gets 10 out of 10 in my books 🙂.

Try raising the voltage on the Kingmax and you will get better speeds. Kingmax runs very cool so raising the voltage should hurt. I have a 256 MB stick of Kingmax PC2700 running at 180 MHz CAS 2 @ 2.8 volts with no problems at all.

Your problem is due more to motherboard memory compatibility than the quality of the memory. I've run Crucial memory in three different motherboards and after switching to Kingmax was able to run much higher memory speeds in all three boards.
Running CAS2 BIOS settings is pretty much of a waste, Sandra reports an average of 40pts difference on a 2200 level score which is completly unnoticible to any running application or game. CAS2 settings can also cause strange crashes or infinite loop video errors, things not conducive to real performance.

i get a 1000 more points in 3dmark 2001 going from cas 2.5 to cas 2. 3dmark might not be the best benchmark, but it tells you that something is going on. and i've never had any memory attributable crashes at a cas of 2.

Just to be sure... did you put the KingMax PC2700 memory into your second machine and see if it can run in CAS2 mode?
