I have the K7S5A m/b, which most people know, has no multiplier or voltage adjustments, and limited FSB!

I decided today to see how much higher than my previous 1686MHz (146.7x11.5) i could get my AGOIA "9" 1800+ to run.

It all started by lapping my FOP heatsink See this isn't it shiny! :D

After consulting the OCInside.de XP Painting guide, came the next daunting task, which was to cut some of the L3 and L4 bridges. I didn't get a pic of that cos i didn't want to possibly slip when holding the camera and dig too far into the CPU! It's quite daunting cutting into a £60 CPU with a Stanley knife! :Q

Then it was the task of joining the relevent L3/4 bridges with the master of all Athlon unlocking, the mechanical pencil :)

The 12.5x multiplier was selected, CPU reseated, the computer fired up and et voila, it POSTed as an Athlon 1250 :D Changing the FSB to 133 gave me the 2000+ :) FSB was pumped up to 143, the highest it would POST at, for 2200+ baby!

This would not get into Windows, unfortunately :(

So, i knocked down the mulitplier to 12, and it booted again (after resetting the BIOS) at 1200 :) Changed the FSB to 146.7, and again POSTed at 2200+ (same pic as last one in case u didn't click ;)) This time it got into Windows, where the CPU speed was noted as 1760MHz :)

So i went to click on the Start menu to get the Run command to bench UT2k3, and it froze as soon as i touched the mouse button :(

Knocked the FSB back down to 143 (the only other option, remember i have a K7S5A with very limited FSB speeds! ;)) and booted straight up at 2100+, and am still in Windows over an hour later at 1711Mhz :D (Screenshot taken 18 minutes ago, time taken to write this and upload pictures :))

I take no responsibility if anything happens, I was just mad enough to try it, and it worked for me, no guarantees it will work for you. I only pu t this here for reference that in fact it can be done.

hmm i also have K7s5a..

and also recently purchased 1600+xp agoia Y(the good one..) from newegg to play around with...

you mean to tell me the pencil trick works on an XP processor? (i thought that doesnt work?)... how did u draw ur lines ?

also, I was thinking about joining the bridges with some thin (thinner than hair thin) wires.. would that work? i thought i saw something like that on the web before but cant find it...

edit - oh, btw .. is 12.5 max ? from the ocinside guide, u can go much higher.. like 13.5x (which i was thinking about doing, since my memory doesnt like high fsb over 143)

Yep, you can go higher than 12.5

I got it booting up/running Windows at 13x multi, but the FSB was lower cos i'm close to top speed for my processor, but i wanted faster FSB speeds (cos Seti@home loves high fsb/memory speeds)

i see, just to make sure.. You did unlock and did all that with a PENCIL on an XP processor, right?

if you say yes.. ill attempt it now.

Well, i didn't unlock the L1 bridges, cos my motherboard has no multiplier adjustments.

But, i did connect the L3/4 bridges with a pencil, yes :)

Go, go now, and report back! :p

If you're gonna try the L1, don't forget to put the glue/nail polish in the laser pits, on others it doesn't matter, only L1 does it matter :)

BTW, you might have to cut some of the bridges in order to get 13x.

This can be daunting! What i did was score it lightly with the knife, then gradually go deeper, til i could just start seeing it go slightly goldy. Cos the connections are underneath the substrate surface, so you will need to dig in a little.

well seems like 10.5 x to 12.5 x seems like least damaging (?) attempt.. here i go..
ill report back .

well well well :)

that took like 2 minutes, running happily @ 1728!! stock voltage, (yes im using that cpu to post this now :))

do I dare attempt to go higher? damn im happy that i can do this on k7s5a.. lovin it :)

let me run some stability tests first. hehe didnt think it would be this easy :)

Yeah, it's definately easier than i thought it would be! Even with having to cut the bridges on my 1800+ (11.5 multi) to get to 12/12.5 :)

Glad you got it all working :) Makes me feel good knowing that i have helped someone else out :D

How deep must you cut?? I'm planning to do this too. The pencil trick does work even though you don't fill the gaps??? LMK. :D

Oh yeah baby. 1 minute of work and I'm at 1.8Ghz! WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOooo...........

THis is better than unlocking the whole CPU if you don't dare to close the gaps and paint the bridges. You can just change the multipliers via pencil in the future! Yeah baby!!!!!! YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great!, what multiplier, FSB and voltage did u use?

i just changed multi to 12.5 and stock volt @ 1.75 with 138fsb.
im wondering if i should push this thing further since ur getting over 1.8 ghz!! good job.

145x12.5@1.75v = 1817Mhz. :D It's not really stable though but I did not have any problems under win2k. My linux bounced out from the root for awhile but that was it. I'll go into the stability tomorrow. It's too late to ponder around now. :D

What core is your's?? What date is it?? LMK. :)

Is 12.5 the preferred multiplier?

It is if you're on a 266FSB board and prefer to o/c the FSB instead. If you're on a 333Fsb board. You can try 11 or 11.5 instead. :)

Two questions,

What did you use to get your heatsink so smooth? I can't get anywhere close with very high grit sand paper.

Also, anybody know how the AROIA stepping overclocks? I've read that it is close to the AGOIA but with high temps?

Thanks

I used a combination of 1200 and 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper, wet of course. After that i used some Automotive rubbing compound to smooth it up a little.

I've got a reason to believe that they're equal or AROIA is a tad bit better. :)

Doesn't the automotive compound reduce heat transfer if you use it or would it be just like the aluminum itself or better?

Will see how fast I can get.

For the lapping he will have been using something like 'T-Cut', an automotive paint cutting compound. You can also use toothpaste, believe it or not, to bring out the final smooth finish. Just be sure to clean the surface with Isopropyl Alcohol after to remove any residue.

Wow, that's really nice. I have the k7s5a (although no way I can use it--I burned my processor--if you want this mobo, PM me I may sell it :D). Maybe I'll try this out, I can probably pick up an XP for a couple days to test this out.

Oh yeah, and from your mechanical pencil picture, it looks like you also have the same keyboard as I do. heh.

One more thing, my new XP 1600+ does not have a single connected bridge on it, it has some of the gaps in between the connectors but not a single bringe. It is a green AROIA core. Does the lack of briges hinder overclocking in any way, is this something new from AMD?

Thanks

I've got the Logitech Cordless iTouch :) Along with the Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical, a great combination! :)

Will this pencil trick work on the L11 bridges also? I need to raise the voltage a bit to make it more stable but dont want to go through the "fill in the gap" procedure.
