I'd rather net $2.5k/month than draining my account right now. If I work there for four months, I'll easily line up a job in SF and then have 10k saved. Not the best situation but not the worst either.

Net $2.5k/month while living in SF and expecting to be able to save $10k in 4 months?

That's plain horseshit.

Let me guess, you have friends there who will let you stay on their couch right?

:hmm:

Yeah you're not saving 10k that fast. Check the price of a mortgage these days, city taxes, hydro, gas, food etc... you'll be spending at least 2k/mo just to live. But either way, congrats on the job!

Don't be one of those people that job hops all the time though, you can never get yourself properly established in life and it will cost you more in the long run. Fcebook sounds like a good place to work, you can probably move up there as time progresses.

I run a couple whore houses. Did I not mention that before?

He didn't get the job at FB but at some start-up.

And after living expenses, that net of $2.5k is all gone. Saving $10k in four months? 😀

funny how you could have been doing this all along but were being a loser. at least now you are seeing the light. gotta start somewhere.

and i think your math is WAY fucking off. hope it's not a dev job where having strong math skills is important. good luck with that!

I want to join everyone in flaming trident but remember he literally has no life experiences. He still has to learn how much it costs to live.

Hell I'm still learning.

Bitch ass questions get smart ass answers. Get on my level!

I wouldn't make the assertion if I didn't have proof that I could do it, biiitch!
Your history over the past 8 months indicate otherwise.

Amazing how the rest of us are so wrong in our advice and yet you're so spot on and obviously doing it the right way.

Must make you feel proud that with all the education and skillzzzzzzzzzzz you supposedly have, everyone here thinks you're an idiot.

I'm waiting for the day that TridenT crosses into Dave levels of crazy. He's not there just yet but he is close.

Just like you easily lined up a 70k job right out of school, amirite? 😎

Seriously though, congratulations on finding something and accepting (assuming you did, anyway) a job even if it wasn't what you wanted. I started in IT less than 2.5 years ago at a very entry level salary and have more than doubled my overall income since then. You gotta start somewhere.

yeah based on what he's saying about his hints at his salary, i'm willing to bet that he is starting out at a higher base salary than i did in the software dev field. 10 years later i'm almost at 3x the salary i was at when i entered the workforce. you gotta start somewhere

granted, i didn't have months of unemployment on my belt either lol.

plot twist: trident gets IT job at a community college, installs unauthorized software, gets charged with crime, turns into a looney, crashes motorcycle, becomes even loonier

Be careful with your expectations and estimates, there are a lot of costs of living you did not consider since it did not pop up before, especially if you're paying for your own living. It's very different than crashing at a friend's place, very different. You will have unexpected expenses so unless you are receiving a weekly check from your parents, you should adjust your plan accordingly and on the more conservative side.

Finding a job though, even if it's most likely for short term, is a good first step.

I know the costs of living... I've lived by myself for years. For most of my time in Seattle, I lived off <$900/month. It won't be the same in the bay area because my rent will be much higher but I know how to make a budget work!

What part of the Bay Area are you looking at? Or are you actually considering living in the miserable cesspool that used to be San Francisco?

It's a secret.

I actually wanted to live in Pacifica if I ended up working in San Francisco but I don't think I'll be working in San Francisco. It depends on what offer I take. More likely I'll be working and living in the south bay. Probably San Jose, unfortunately. I rather be in SF but that's how it is.

Cost of living is lower there but it's not that low. A studio is still $1500/month.
