The attitude that "it's no big deal" is probably why young people have such piss-poor communications skills. People claim they're just being "lazy" because it's just a message board, but it
carries over into professional communication as well.
Interesting article.
"The more electronic and global we get, the less important the spoken word has become, and in e-mail clarity is critical," said Sean Phillips, recruitment director at another Silicon Valley corporation, Applera , a supplier of equipment for life science research, where most employees have advanced degrees. "Considering how highly educated our people are, many can't write clearly in their day-to-day work."
I have a much easier time expressing myself clearly in writing (typing, actually, writing makes my hands cramp up quickly) than I do verbally. My backspace key gets heavy use, and the end result comes out looking great. Unfortunately, there is no good verbal backspace key, so I sometimes wind up spitting out several words of incoherent verbage, until I just pause, think it all over, and finally make something that sounds like real English.
I generally have a whole thought, or conflicting thoughts, in my head, and then I'll try to mesh words - you think, "throw the ball" and "toss the ball" at the same time. It's the same thing, but different words. So it comes out "thr-, to-......t.h.r.o.w. the ball," stuttering on each attempt to say both "throw" and "toss". Kind of annoying sometimes, really.
The thought is present in 24-bit WAV format, but it gets sliced down to 24kbps 8-bit MP3 in the translation to words.
