It's snowing!

This was taken from my front window, yesterday (Christmas), at about 2PM. About 2 hours north of Dallas-Ft Worth metroplex. We got ~2.5 inches of snow, after a bit of freezing rain.

Best part? I'm off work today, because of it! :awe:

The snow of the 24th didn't stick around for Christmas, but it's coming down again today. They predict an entire 1/2" for the day! Hey, it beats the amount of snow in Tallahassee.

We got about 1/2 inch yesterday morning...then, (fortunately) it turned to rain and it went away. We spent Christmas with some friends...they got 2-3 inches at their house and even though it rained there later, the snow stayed.

LOL seriously, they canceled work? Even if we get 3 feet overnight here, there's no excuse to be late. That's barely any snow, I can still see most of the lawn. Not even worth shoveling. Brush off the car, and all set to go anywhere. :awe:

This is what it looks like here right now. We only got it in the past few weeks though. We came close to getting a green Christmas.

This is actually not considered much snow for here either. Typically we'd have at least this much by November.

So dark, gray, depressing. Only difference between land and sky is that the sky is darker. I'd kill myself.

Haha the pics do make it seem darker, it's actually quite bright out, despite being cloud covered. We do get the sun every now and then though. THAT is bright, as it reflects on the snow. I've seen people wear sun glasses in winter. Looks kinda funny but it actually can get quite bright.

I always have this "bright" idea of installing solar panels on my roof, this reminds me how silly of an idea that would be. :awe:

Not all of COTUS has the same level of snow equipment, and only a small number actually require snow tires (VT and I think MN come to mind). People who aren't used to snow in their area are probably the worst danger. Texas has little reason to maintain roads for snow since it usually just melts off the road in a day.

Yeah guess I see see it as being dumbfounding when such a paltry amount can actually shut down a city. Even without snow tires that's not really anything challenging to drive through. It's pretty much just normal driving as the tires will still make contact with the pavement. I personally never bother with snow tires but I probably should. I just know to be more careful when I'm on the snow surface. An inch is not something worth taking out plows or any other equipment out for. It just gets flattened over time.

Im from Texas. We see snow probably once a year. It freaks people out. I can't explain it. Even grocery shopping a few days before the snow storm of the century can be hectic. They act like a blizzard of epic proportions is on it's way and the shelves get cleaned off.
Im like you in the fact that it's not a big deal. Just drive slower.

This discussion happens every year. 😛

No salt, sanders are slower to respond (it was also Christmas) and there's fewer of them.
No snow tires or chains.
Melting re-freezing=thin layers ice not snow, often patchy so it catches people by surprise. This is by far the worst part.
Lack of experience driving.

Most corporate jobs just say fuck it, it's 1-2 days tops.

Here it's usually a few days till the plows pass anyway. They tend to wait till the storm is over so as to not do it for nothing. Some people get snow tires but they're not mandatory. There has been talks of making it mandatory though.

Though when it's warm out it can suck though as it can melt/freeze etc. Here it snows, and it tends to just stay as snow, so it's not as bad.

not much snow here.

There is a storm moving in slowly that's supposed to dump a bunch of snow on us. Not sure when that will happen. The storm is to the south of us just over lake Erie.

normally winter here looks like what's in Red Squirrel's pictures.

Plow? What's that? 😉

If we get snow (freezing rain is more common), it almost always happens when it's 34 degrees when it start. The snow melts, temp drop even more as the front moves through, freezes into sheets of ice overnight. Morning drive=LOLOLOL, so fuck it. Temps get above freezing by 12-2PM, rinse-repeat. I can't recall a single time we have had precip when it was well into freezing before it started. One of the worst road condition days we had all we got was a quarter of an inch.

Snow missed St Louis, MO. However it did snow south of here. It is cold enough, but no moisture. St Louis, MO is often either just below or just above the storm lines depending on what the jet stream does.

Oh nasty, yeah when it's not even cold and it precipitates then that's another story. Makes a slush/ice crap that makes driving a bit harder, and also gets all over your shoes making even walking without getting wet, a challenge. Bottom line is though people need to learn to slow the hell down and drive according to the condition. I prefer driving in winter in general though since the roads are not as rough.

Wow, an hour ago, I was thinking, "where's all the snow they said we're supposed to get today?" Not a bit of snow was coming down. We're forecast for 15-20 inches. (Up to 50cm for you ATOTers up in Canuckistan) I scoffed. Well, now I'm looking out & doing some quick arithmetic based on the sudden coverage of the road & cars - 20 inches is easily doable by midnight at this rate.

They supposedly don't even plough much out in Alberta. Just pack the snow then sand the hell out of it. Too cold for salt. Apparently it works too, so well that a lot of people don't even use snow tires. The added bonus is your car lasts longer as salt is the number one worst thing for the body.

Quebec has mandatory snow tires already. All I know is I can't afford them if they do. I'll just have to take the risk of getting a ticket. They're not necessary in urban areas anyway, where most people in Ontario live. Roads are bare and dry for most of the winter given the obscene amount of salt they put down.

The snow is supposed to start around 5-6pm here just west of Toronto. Already looks ominous outside. Been very grey and dull all day.

the storm has finally hit here. Snowing pretty good now.

they say we're looking at 4 to 10 cm of snow. Very windy here, too. Wouldn't be surprised if we get plenty of drifting snow.

its -5C now. The wind is making it feel much colder.

Man, we had two tornadoes destroy about 30 houses on Christmas. That was a hell of a front, it was 75 Christmas morning and tomorrow it's supposed to be 28.
