It's Oscar time.

Leto was bringing in all the current tragedies of the world, which were more or less unrelated to anything going on with him. I won't fault him for that--I can only assume these things are indeed important to him. It was just came off very unfocused and, well, a bit out there?

The girl whose name I can not remember was only talking about her life and what she went through to get where she was. No one can deny that honesty, and it was also very focused. She conveyed honest emotion; Leto conveyed well-groomed hair. 😀

not gonna lie, i tuned out after a while for both of them.

Steve McQueen's screenwriter didn't even exchange looks or congrats with each other when he came down the aisle. Those two seem to have serious issues with each other.

McQueen comes off as a major Class A douche so I can see creative people not wanting anything to do with the dude after the project was over.

EDIT: Haha! I Googled up these two and I see that I wasn't the only one to notice this:

cate blanchett went on and on.

steve mcqueen was rambling and was hard to understand.

Every time they have talked about Steve McQueen recently I thought hey Steve McQueen is dead. Then of course I realize they are talking about the other guy. They need to make him change his name.

This one is a film director, producer, screenwriter, video artist and black. Hard to confuse between the two, one died too 33 years ago. 😉

Since I hadn't heard of the first one until the Oscars announced him, I was surprised as well. "What? A black guy impersonating an icon! Get 'em!" He wasn't even wearing Persol sunglasses...

having watched 12 years, nebraska and Dallas buyers over the weekend, I fail to see how Lupita Nyong'o beat out June Squibb and Jennifer Lawrence for best supporting actress. Was it the whipping scene that got her the win? Squibbs and lawrences performances were way way way better.

for me Chiwetel Ejiofor should have won best actor, his performance was awesome.

Ellen's "joke" was not a joke.

I just watched The Butler and I must admit I had the impression that it was going for the Black themed movie of the year but 12 Years blew them out of the water.

It might be a racially motivated thought, but that was my impression

Finally got around to watching 12 Years tonight. I have no idea how this movie won best picture. Also have no idea how Lupita won best supporting actress.

Was basically a paint by numbers slave drama. Hate to sound insensitive, but it was definitely "been there, done that" territory.

Thinking back on all the movies I've watched from 2013, and I'm finding it weird the one I really liked wasn't up for any awards, Prisoners.

It was pretty moving considering it was made from a first-hand account.

No doubt that what happened to him was terrible. I think the last ten minutes were the best part of the movie.

Perhaps if I hadn't known what was going to happen, it might have been more moving or more suspenseful or more engaging but it wasn't. You can make movies about someone where you know what happens engaging. Wolf of Wall Street, The Butler, Rush, Saving Mr. Banks. All biographical movies that came out in 2013 that were entertaining and engaging. It can be done, it just wasn't here.

Bit of a necro it looks, but I personally wanted to like Rush and really didn't.

I really didn't care for 12 Years either.

Did I miss something or did the director not do a very good job of showing the passage of time? The only reason I knew he was a slave for 12 years was because of the movie title. Otherwise I'd have thought he got out in 2 years.

I agree but am not sure how it could be handled better. Movie was already a little long and there was a lot in it.

Maybe some throwaway lines in the movie like "we picked that field two years ago" or something could have conveyed a better sense of elapsed time.

The only time I thought the movie showed time passing was after (I guess I should spoiler tag this)
he gave Brad Pitt his letter to take up north, there was a scene that was about 40s long, where he's looking to the left side of the frame, then is slowly turning to the right at the same time the season change appears to be reflected on his face and the background.

When I first saw that scene I was like 'did we need to pad the run time or something?' but figured it was a passage of time transition.

And, of course, the ending when he gets back home to his family.

I mean, Chiwetel Ejiofor is a fantastic actor and I might say he deserved the best actor award, but I haven't seen Dallas Buyer's Club to compare it to. But I feel the same way about 12 Years that I do about Gravity. Of course it deserved all the technical awards it was up for, including best director, but no way in hell should it have ever been nominated for best picture and even Bullock's nomination I'm kind of meh about.
