Why do they always give prices with 2yr contracts? Not everyone on Earth is stupid enough to sign themselves into one of those moronic things. Just tell me how much the fucking thing will cost.

I told you to drop the foul and inflammatory language, it will not be tolerated here.

Here in the US its usually cheaper to buy it with a contract and then pay the ETF if you want to get something new, rather than paying the absurd full price you might pay otherwise.

However, since you will likely jump on this to start a "lolz I'm from NZ and hate the US" flamewar, I will not respond to anything else on this matter.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. I've been with the same provider for years so there is no reason for me to be stupid enough to pay full price when I know I'm not going to change providers. If I suddenly want to leave for some reason I'll just pay the early termination fee. Early termination fee + subsidized price is often pretty close to the unsubsidized price on a brand new phone.

So I can't decide between the Samsung Focus and the HTC Surround. The Focus has the bigger screen with the Super AMOLED display (I haven't played with the Galaxy S line, so I'm not sure how nice that is), but the HTC's design is more attractive...

Thoughts anyone?

BTW, the Surround is $549.99 no contract from BestBuy.

Surround. Samsung's support for their phones suck, and if it's true that the Focus is based off the Galaxy S hardware, odds are the GPS will blow balls.

You'd be one in a few - there's a LOT more people experiencing issues than there are with working GPS. On top of the fact that previous Samsung handsets have had issues in the past and it took Samsung over a year to fix them.

Just preordered the Surround - has anyone else preordered a WP7 device?

Nah, I'm waiting on the damn Venue Pro! I might go to AT&T and pick up a Samsung Focus to hold me over...who knows, maybe I'll really like it and not want to wait for the keyboard.

As I recall, the issue with the Galaxy S GPS is the Android drivers, isn't it? Considering how tightly Microsoft is controlling this, I doubt they'd let a device with subpar GPS drivers through the door.

I am actually not going to preorder but I will be getting either a hd7 or venue pro on tmobile. I don't know which one I like better right now so I want to wait until I can go play with both and then decide which one I want. I like and dislike elements of both and it really is a tossup between those 2 for me so I don't want to choose one based off pictures/spec sheets and have to live with that one for a while.

I have a question I haven't seen answered elsewhere, on WP7, who is responsible for the updates? Is Microsift going to handle it since they have relatively strict hardware requirements or is this the manufacturer like Android?

Edit: I'm an idiot, it's directly on the wiki, MS is doing the updates so you songbirds to worry about the OEM's getting lazy.

What do you guys think of the reported long app load times? I was listening to the Engadget podcast yesterday and they said that "The Harvest" game took about 3 minutes to load (from start to loading the map), while apps like twitter took around a minute. Also, after locking, and then unlocking, the phone has to load the app again.

The curved screen on the VP interests me greatly...

Slow app loads plague the ZuneHD too, I wonder if its something with the architecture? Where did you see Twitter was that slow though - I saw that the average game load time was a minute, but not day-to-day apps.

Granted the emulator is not indicitive of hardware performance, when playing around with the SDK, apps load very quickly.

I'm in the same boat. It's either an HD7 or Venue Pro for me and I just want more details on each plus some hands-on time with at least the HD7 (not sure if they're going to put the Venue Pro in stores from the Engadget info). I can't wait until these land at my local T-Mobile store! I'll be keeping my Nexus One so I can play with Gingerbread, though.

Considering all capabilities the OS lacks, call me unimpressed. No no copy/paste, no multitasking, no file manager, no BT file transfer, no USB mass storage mode, no internet tethering... it's ridiculous.

I think its certainly the best implementation of user GUI so far, but it seems to be all flash no substance (Add in no HSPA+ for tmo) and it makes me leery of jumping on.

I would like android, but from what ive seen from my friends, etc it requires too much "maintenance" for a phone. IMHO this is one thing that should just be rocksolid 24/7 and not require the use of task killers or other BS to keep working.

I wish RIM would get its head out of its ass and do something worthwhile, but I dont see that happening anymore.

Paul Miller said it on the live feed of Engadget's podcast, yesterday.

I would recommend that everyone interested in WP7 devices listen to it when Engadget posts the recording.

Copy/paste is coming in January with an update, and I believe there was mention that multi-tasking akin to how iOS does it will come too. The others, meh - everyday users don't use them. This OS is not aimed at those who like to tinker and mod their phones (I've been able to tether for 7 years on multiple phones, but I've never done it) - it's aimed at the everyday user, much like those who use Blackberries, iPhones, etc.

The Windows Weekly podcast over the last few months has really gotten me interested in WP7. Too bad it won't be on Verizon for at least a few months.

In case anyone was still curious about this, I haven't really noticed the app load time issue. I haven't tried the big 3D games or anything like that, but those that thought day-to-day apps like Twitter would also take forever to load, luckily were incorrect. The first time you load something like Twitter or Facebook there's a delay while it pulls down your data, but after that, its quick enough.

I was playing with the Focus and Surround at an AT&T store today, and honestly, I witnessed absolutely no lag whatsoever. It did take probably 20-25 seconds to load a game, but otherwise, it was extremely fluid and quick. I loved every second of playing with that phone. I can't get it till Verizon gets it though, and by then, it will be a rehash of these phones with CDMA radios inside. :(

So did anybody get one?

I am out to my local watering hole now, and maybe on the way back I will stop by the verizon store and check out one of them.
